he never had a trainer for this fight, what kind of fighter thinks they can go over to new york an win....you get what you put into your training an craig trains in greggs..
Lee's already beaten him as an amateur and a pro. Why on earth would he deserve a rematch? And if they did rematch Lee would KO him sooner.
Well, a rematch would have been attractive in 2011 or most of 2012... After all, they fought close the first time and there was hardly any more shame in McEwan losing to Quillin than Lee to Chavez, so there hadn't yet come to be a huge rift in their career trajectories yet by that point. Now after the events of the last year unfolding as they did, even with Lee being a ways off still from where he wants to get back to (and having struggled mightily with Fitz, but then looking better pounding Cunningham and Hafner) he is currently several tiers above his old rival. McEwan is now at too low a point to even be considered. Lee would probably get more credit for taking and breezing a Fitzgerald rematch than a McEwan rematch currently. (at least Fitz would probably make it the distance again)
It still is a shock for a onetime world contender to lose to a Dashon Johnson (with all due respect to "Fly Boy") whether he put in a proper camp or not. McEwan should have been able to sleepwalk through Johnson, and more or less tried just that - but he is no longer sharp enough to get away with that.
McEwan has plenty of talent, however he has a few fundamental issues: - Lack of trainer and cohesion. Obviously it is difficult having a young family and relocating, especially when you are from a tight knit family. He should go back to a local trainer and ensure he is settled. Alex Arthur may be a good fit. -Fitness Levels. He seems to employ a friend Andy Noble to do his strength and conditioning. Not detracting from this boys prowess as a coach, but if he is overly pally with this boy, it can have a detrimental effect on his conditioning level. He has never been in optimal condition since turning pro, and this has been reflected in getting drained in the later rounds. - Hung up on the past. The problem here is Craig has mixed at a higher level, but appears to feel he has a right to beat people now that he would have done 3 years ago. He is not in the same shape, does not have the same sparring or the same youth, so needs to be realistic in his approach to fights and the competition. - Boxer mover in the amateurs. Can't stand and trade in the pro's like he has tried to as he has little power. When he boxes and moves he can be an excellent fighter. -Motivation. As stated, Craig seems to be kidding himself re motivation. Puts up twitter comments etc but is sort of forcing it on himself instead of actually wanting to do it. Needs to get a good base, stable family life and kick on from there. -Promoter. Obviously a big issue. Perhaps he would be better going with Steve Goodwin, Mick Hennessy (who has just lost a middleweight). This would mean fighting in England but that is no issue. Remember this is the lad who was a main event v Andy Lee who was not far off beating him 2/3 years ago. He still has a good 3 years left as a pro to make some decent money but needs to really commit himself.
whiteman agree with everything you say but last part. dont think he has 3 years left think he done, but would loved to be proved wrong an see him come back.
I'll try and upload the Johnson match tonight so you all can judge for yourselves whether he just 'under-trained' or is truly finished. (as he tweeted himself today...)
Come to reflect, I don't recall noticing who there was in the corner. :huh I'll have a look tonight, and try getting it uploaded as mentioned above.
I trained Craig late 2011 and when he got offered the kid chocolate fight I advised him not to take the fight he took it. Craig enjoys 1-2-1 coaching and is a very very talented lad, his problem is he has imo been badly ill advised by non boxing people
I heard no one trained him.. I dont know Craig personally have him on Facebook and seen him fight a few times. He has a lot of talent more than most. I hope he can achieve what he needs to as a lot of guys retire thinking what if.. I'm guessing he has more regrets than most from what he puts
Billy, who does your strength and conditioning?non boxing people? his dad is a boxing man through and through. Still time
