Went to a dinner and boxing card tonight at the Hilton in Glasgow. Craig Windsor Jr was taking on Kevin McCauley for the "British Masters Title", Craig is 7-1-0 with his only defeat coming by way of TKO earlier this year after he got cut above the eye, he puts on a good show but his style is pretty crude tbf and he really just looks to bang his guy out early. Kevin is a 9 & 30 journeyman but has solid defensive boxing ability albeit lacking a bit of power. His defensive style is probably what has cost him a lot of decisions in the past. So it was pretty much a given tonight that he was there to get beat. Kevin didn't read the script however and went on to win a referees decision after a good solid performance. Craig came out fast as expected in rounds 1-3, throwing huge looping lead right hooks but they were sloppy and McCauley was defensively sound, catching the majority of the shots on his gloves and weathering the storm. Windsors problem was he was throwing one shot at a time and putting all his power into it, by the 4th round he had slowed down considerably while McCauley, still fresh, started to use his solid boxing skills and worked off his jab, occasionally stringing 4-5 punch combinations together. It was a close fight and although I didn't score it throughout, I have no issue with the decision. Windsor needs to learn how to box if he wants to progress his career past this level. He looks a little bulky for his weight class and could do with dropping some bulk and muscle and coming down a class or so to where he is a similar height to his opposition. Ronnie Clark, the undercard fighter put on a great display tonight, stopping his opponent in the 1st round with some impressive shots. He is a kid worth keeping an eye on, he looked improved since his last bout at the Lagoon a couple month back. He is now 3(2) - 0.
Was suppsed to be going tonight but couldn't get anyone else to go. I know Windosr and he is a good lad. That is bad news and a big blow for him as he had ideas of fighting for British and European titles. Macualey is a better boxer than his record suggests.
I never ever thought he would win,dunno why but when I seen the fight made thought he might have struggled. Thing is the guy looks lold,but he's only in his late 20's or something. Was Harrison doing his corner?
Yeah it's a bad one for him for the fact the McCauleys record makes him look worse than he really is, the style just matched up badly for him and I was fairly gutted at the end of night. Craigs a top lad, we spoke to him and his da before the fight ... they're both really nice guys.
Nah, I didn't see Harrison in his corner, his dad was in his corner but they did have auction off a pair of gloves that the ring announcer said was signed by "former heavyweight champion of the world Scott Harrison" :huh At first it looked like no ****s was going to bid on em but they ended up getting about 280 quid in the end. I think Scott's keeping a low profile at the mo. Aye, I know what you mean about him looking old (the baldy heid doesn't help the cause) but he's a powerful wee guy. He just needs to do more boxing in there, not swinging from the hip hoping to take guys out in one shot. To me, he's always gonna struggle against a sound boxer type that will just let him wear himself out in the early rounds because he is bulky and those shots take a lot out of you when yer missing ... he needs to work on his jab, use it to create openings, put more punches together and conserve himself a bit.
