Crawford aside, 2014 has been a bad year for US Boxers

    Terrence Crawford
has had a great year and is a contender for fighter of the year with wins over Ricky Burns, Yuriorkis Gamboa and Raymundo Beltran. But aside from him things aren't so rosy on the US domestic scene. Let's take a look:

Floyd Mayweather Jr had two tougher than expected fights with Argentine plodder Marcos Maidana in two fights nobody wanted despite Mayweather claiming he wants to give the fans what they want. He seems more intent on fighting Manny Pacquiao on ebay rather than fighting him in the ring like a man.

Andre Ward's only battles this year have been losing one's in the courtroom to his late promoter Dan Goossen and he isn't showing any signs of getting back in the ring soon. James Kirkland is another fighter who's taking time out of his career doing nothing, as too is Mikey Garcia who hasn't fought since January but seems to think he can move up 2 divisions and whip Pacquiao.

Danny Garcia has had a year that is up for high criticism, first earning a very disputed decision over Manuel Herrera and then fighting an undersized bum in a fight that are quickly becoming billed as an Al Haymon special.

Bernard Hopkins dream of unifying the light heavyweight division is all but over after he was shut out by Sergey Kovalev, his career maybe too.

Former Hopkins conqueror Chad Dawson has totally lost the plot and was outpointed by a journeyman. Early signs seem to indicate former Cotto conqueror Austin Trout is heading the same way.

The US Heavyweight scene continues to struggle with hopes now, almost laughably, pinned on the glass chin of Deontay Wilder.

In the Welterweight division Shawn Porter was heralded as the next big thing when he ended the relevance of Paulie Malignaggi once and for all. However Porter then ran into undefeated Brit Kell Brook and received a boxing lesson. Odds are the same thing happens to Devon Alexander at the hands of Amir Khan next weekend. Keith Thurman has a fight lined up on the same card, but hasn't really moved forward from where he was this stage last year. Tim Bradley's 0 went at the hands of Manny Pacquiao and has become one of the forgotten men of the division, along with Robert Guerrero.

Jermain Taylor regained a 160lb strap, but will likely be in prison before he defends it. Cornelius Bundrage, Jessie Vargas, Lamont Peterson and Mikey Bey also have belts but are amongst boxing most paper champions.

Peter Quillin shamelessly ducked the chance to defend his WBO title and ditched the belt instead. Demetrius Andrade ducked the chance to replace him, then duck a fight with Jermell Charlo.

Glass chinned hype-jobs Adrien Broner and Victor Ortiz continue to be an embarrassment to the sport and the human race in general.

So, are the USA fighters going to have a better 2015? Or are they becoming also-rans in the sport in general like they have become in the higher weight divisions?

If it's been a bad year for US boxers, then it's been a disaster for Australian boxers.

Geale lost to Golovkin, Caparello lost to Kovalev, Soliman lost to Taylor, and Damien Hooper got KO'd.

even with all that America is still the best and that's with most of our athletes going in to other sports.

Stricter drug testing is the reason America is becoming an also ran in the Sport above all else.

Did you know, taking TRB ratings and the top 5 in each division USA don't even have twice as many boxers in the top 5 at the UK (and that's counting Mayweather twice and inactive Ward) despite having nearly 6 times the population. :think

And that version of Rugby they have that they call football, notice how they have to wear motorcycle helmets to protect their glass chins? :think

British fighters are still nowhere near the top 10. Tell me when a Brit fighter gets there, thanks.

British fighters are overall, very very very mediocre. :yep

Calzaghe went 17 and 0 against The USA.

Nobody in Red, White and Blue could save the day against The Fighting Pride of Newbridge Wales. :deal
