not bad it peaked at 871,000 viewers http://www.boxingnews24.com/2016/12/crawford-molina-averages-806k-viewers-hbo/
I wouldn't be surprised. HBO tends to always have more subscribers than Showtime. HBO just shows all around better content. I have both HBO AND Showtime, and DVR'D Crawford-Molina.
Damn. Showtime did 327k peaking at 368k, just showing HBO has more subscribers than Showtime does, that watch boxing. Not that it's actually a surprise.
But his last fight did so poorly. Why did this one do well if it is a worse matchup than his last fight and many considered his last bout to be boring?
I'm still annoyed Molina got paid $400,000 for that "performance". It made no sense for HBO to drop nearly $2 mil on that fight. If you're looking for a stay busy fight for Bud, at least get him somebody who will come forward and make it more fun to watch. This was just another "F-it" job like the Broner fight was for Molina. While Walters didn't do much in hindsight, I have a hard time justifying how Molina made $100k more than the Axe Man did. I guess Bud's a big enough draw in Omaha that they can afford it.
Timing. Scheduling. Counter programming. If you are up against Football games, The Big Bang Theory, The Walking Dead season finale, etc. you are going to get crushed in the ratings. Do you have a good lead in before your program, for instance Game of Thrones? Is your program followed by a popular show which people will stick through the end of your show to see, for instance Westworld? What time is your fight and will half the country be asleep when it airs? That's all going to play a factor.
I think the rationale went more like Molina and Provodnikov are both Top Rank fighters. Winner gets a payday with Crawford another Top Rank fighter. Bob Arum doesn't have a huge stable at 140 and if he's going to maximize profits he needs to keep fights in house, so this is all he had available. That's the same reason we got Pacquiao vs Bradley 3 and Pacquiao vs Vargas instead of more interesting fights. It's all in house matchmaking. Why's Pacquiao fighting Rios? Because they both work for Bob Arum. 'Nuf said?
Good point. I know he loves the in-house matchup, but I hadn't realized how slim Bob's pickings are at the weight 'til you mentioned it.
...That's right, and this wasn't. I completely forgot about that, which is silly since I have mentioned it before.
Pacquiao fought Rios because he was coming off of a year long lay off after brutal KO loss... Rios had power, but the safe gamble was that Pacquiao could outbox him easily, which he did (did Rios even win a single round?). Algieri wasn't Top Rank. And they tried to get Danny Garcia and Adrien Broner, but both ducked him.
