During to the buildup of the Crawford-Horn fight, I see very little promotion on this fight, fight got postponed should have been in April. Crawford is an awesome fighter, might well beat Manny convincingly if they fight. But Manny may not fight him unless Bob Arum offers him a huge sum. I like Crawford's fighting style and he can beat the top p4p welters today, but he needs to market himself more.
Look at other boxers in the US — most of them are not promoted at all (except maybe for a couple of really big stars like Alvarez or Golovkin).
I'm sure that fight did great ratings and I believe they even talked about it during game 4 of the NBA finals. Crawford got paid $3M to fight Horn. His brand is doing fine and will only continue to grow.
Holy ****! Crawford is getting paid! But Crawford doesn't have the star qualities. All he can do is keep on winning and he will be known well enough. And if Bob is paying him so much, then Crawford doesn't need to become a star.
No he doesn’t. Not every fighter needs to act out and have an alter ego. People will catch on especially when he takes scalps at 147 which is the money division.
It's quite amazing he's making that much when you consider he's really only known by the hardcore fans. They only sold 8,122 tickets for the Horn fight and he's getting paid more than fighters who sell more tickets. I guess the $500 mill deal with ESPN and Top Rank has given them deep enough pockets to pay that well. Hopefully Crawford's profile will grow when he faces better opposition. There's some cracking fights to be made at welter.
Floyd was the last PPV Mohican who helped raising Clenelo's profile, but that's about it, you ask anyone of the streets about Spence, Crawford or Thurman, and they be like "dude fok is u talking about". Anti-media personality or not, there is no building of the next Leonard today in US boxing, it's a 2nd page sport with an ABC mess watched by an aging hardcore and small local fan base. Crawford is doing all right within those circumstances and he's hardly complaining, but for a national star, you need to look for other nations where boxing is on the front page.
Not sure why everybody has to be a "star" anyway, Not everybody even wants to be a star, Crawford is a quite guy, i don't think hes overly concerned about becoming some mega star to the point where he can't walk down the street without being mobbed, Personally if i was a fighter i would prefer to make good money, be recognised by real boxing fans as one of the best and still be able to live my life relatively normally without being mobbed every where i go. Being a star is for people who want attention and even more money, nothing wrong with that at all but some people also prefer not being in the lime light to the same extent and are more laid back, chilled and perfectly content earning a few mill per fight. As long as the true boxing fans know your one of the best that's all that matters. Nobody "needs" to be a star.
Excellent point plenty of athletes in sports don't go into the sport looking to be rich and famous, many just want to do what they enjoy and excel at it and become the best and perhaps make a living at it if possible. Sometimes the fame and attention is just a distraction for some. It's a shame that a sport like boxing often requires fighters to be stars to be able to get the meaningful fights. Unlike other sports where the best always face the best in competition, boxing is a sport where you can avoid tough opposition and so a fighters ability to draw fans can be essential for ensuring the best fights happen.
The sport is in no weaker position than it was when Mayweather was raking in PPV after PPV. The NFL/NBA still existed.... Boxing was still as 'minor' a sport as it is now.... The PPV money is still there, but the promotion is terrible.
Crawford making that cake, putting his friends and family on all while being a humble hero in the eyes of the people. It all the matters.
crawford is not selling a clothing line, or sneakers. no t-shirts or hats either. He has hired a promoter and manager that are suppose to be in charge of his marketing , interview schedule, television radio apperances, thats why these guys get 30% of the purse. most fighters dont have the fan base of a floyd or canelo. they dont have the marketing abilty of floyd who did his own promotions. And they dont have the personality of Ali, camacho, ect. Sometimes they are just called Gladiator, and thats all you get.
