Both guys should be pushing hard to make this fight happen. I understand if they want to wait until we can have packed stadiums or large crowds when the vaccine is widespread. If they never meet or if they decide when one or both is old, I will NOT watch the fight. Two of the top skilled guys are at the same weight. Both undefeated and both prime (at least for now). Not fighting is inexcusable. This is one of the fights I’d gladly pay to watch. Leaning tirades Crawford but I keep going back and forth. A sign of a true classic matchup!
Their legacies can't be blemished because neither has a legacy to begin with at least not in an ATG or even HOF way. Until the day when boxing is governed by a unified body that decides who fights who this kind of thing will continue, in no other sport do athletes or teams have control over who their opponents are, boxing should be no different.
A legacy isn’t reliant on being atg ot hof. Their legacy is the accomplishments they leave the sport with and pride in their performances. Specifically to these 2 guys, regardless of what directions their respective careers go, there will be a void if they don’t fight. 2 alpha dogs jn the same division means neither is truly alpha.
Of course they do. You don’t have to be hof or atg to have a legacy. Chad Dawson has a legacy. Adonis Stevenson, Sven Ottke, Ray Beltran. Part of Spence and Crawford’s legacy would be that they never fought, if they retired today.
It's a real shame that these two guys won't or can't fight. It's boxing's biggest issue. I don't blame him for wanting a Pac fight. That's a generational paycheck.
I don't agree I always thought of legacy as being representative of either greatness (HOF or ATG) or having achieved something extraordinary (inspiring others, great fights etc). You're correct in that the definition of legacy is what you leave behind but in sportibg terms I've always thought of legacy as something that the greats or the cult figures left behind. No one's going to be talking about these guys in 20 years based on their careers to date
Legacies encompass good and bad. Everyone has a legacy. What would Luis Resto’s legacy be? Ibeabuchi? They don’t have one? The legacy incorporates all they’ve done, good and bad. Not just greats have legacies. Nor are all legacies great.
If this fight is not made it will be a negative mark on both fighters legacies. Not saying they both wont be remembered fondly or thought highly, but the questions will always remain. Roy Jones for all his accomplishments, titles, P4P lists, etc rightly or wrongly, still gets criticism for not fighting Michalczeski. Riddick Bowe still gets criticism for his weak title defenses and not being able to make a fight with Lewis.
