Most boxing matches nowadays start with very slow, feel em out first rounds. Then things typically pick up in round 2 or 3. But what are some boxing matches that started with fireworks right at the beginning of the 1st round? Meaning, ding ding, round 1 starts, and something crazy happens right away. Like a combatant coming out charging his opponent right out of the gate, swinging for the fences, etc. Also what was the fastest knockdown or knockout ever you can remember?
Hagler Hearns is one of the first ones that came to mind. Certainly one of the craziest Round 1's ever, but probably not the craziest first 5-10 seconds of a Round 1 ever. I'm mainly looking for a match that had a completely bonkers first 5-10 seconds of the 1st round. Tyson vs Frazier was an awesome Round 1 as well, but I'm looking for a completely crazy beginning of Round 1, like something just off the wall nuts right at the beginning.
This may not be exactly what you’re looking for if you mean two guys guns-a-blazing from the time the opening bell finishes echoing (although you get that shortly thereafter) but it’s about as crazy a first round as I’ve ever seen. Start with Aaron literally running around the ring for the first minute or so without throwing a punch, the opposite of his usual Tasmanian Devil approach from the first seconds of most fights. Then when he settles down to engage, he literally goes down from the first meaningful punch of the fight, and it’s not just a flash knockdown — he was hit hard and went down hard. But as soon as he bounces up, while the ref is still giving the mandatory eight, Pryor ignores the count and bounds over to the neutral corner where Johnson is standing and starts smack-talking him, smiling all the while. The ref just kind of shrugs and finishes the eight-count, grabs Pryor’s gloves for a quick wipe-down and gets out of the way. From that point on, it’s WWIII. This content is protected
Within a sec or two of opening bell, it wasn’t often picked up that Firpo dropped Dempsey with a right hand as Jack charged across the ring. No count was applied - Dempsey jumped back up and it was on for young and old.
Jeremy Williams vs. Arthur Weathers. Jimmy Thunder vs. Crawford Grimsley. Sechew Powell vs. Cornelius Bundrage (first fight).
Not sure what round, but there’s a clip that shows Foreman, upon the bell, charge across the ring and literally shove his opponent, who’s barely out of his own corner, to the canvas, no punch, not even a pretence of same from George beforehand. Somewhat comical actually.
I'm all for crazy first rounds in general lol. While I'm specifically looking for crazy beginnings to the first round, any kind of unique beginnings of first rounds or unique first rounds in general are definitely fair game, specifically if something unusual happens at the beginning that you describe like : This qualifies for what I'm looking for, for Aaron to come out fighting in the complete opposite way he usually fights, running around the ring without throwing a punch, that's definitely interesting. Basically I'm looking for anything "different" or "unique" at the start of Round 1 than what we are used to seeing. Anything different than just the typical "feel out the entire round 1" "nothing happens all round 1" that we see so often in boxing these days. I'd rather see someone coming out and fighting super defensive Willie Pepp style with all kinds of unusual lateral movement out the gate than just both fighters standing there covering up and doing nothing all round like we see so often these days. I'm looking for anything "fun", "different" or "interesting" that happens at the start of a match that we don't typically see these days or something that is unlike any other beginning of a match to ever happen.
Can't find the fight on YouTube at the moment but Rocky Gannon vs Dominick Carter 1 Round 1 Carter is dropped Gannon is deducted a point Carter is deducted a point Gannon is dropped Fight is waved off by the referee as Gannon gets up and we don't get to see what was turning into a great slug fest This was in 1996, Laurence Cole has been making bad decisions for a long time
Now that you mention it, I think I've seen that too, but I can't remember what fight it was. I have a very foggy memory of seeing what you describe, if you find it please share the clip.
This is so fun to watch. Pryor was such a showman, of course the iconic pointing at the opponent with the right glove when he's announced. Man that never gets old. That sure is a "crazy" beginning of a fight, for him to come out and fight that way. But even before the opening bell, just look at that face off with the referee giving instructions. Like in today's boxing, they don't really let fighters get right up in their opponents grill like this anymore. They always hold them back. In this fight, Pryor goes right up to Johnson, and gets right up against his face. And what this does is, it adds to the buildup and the tension of the opening bell. Then Pryor sort of turns away and smirks. THIS IS ALL MIND GAMES FROM PRYOR RIGHT. Like this makes you think he's going to go FULL OUT. But instead he does the complete opposite and starts dancing like Ali, only faster. We just don't see boxers use that amount of consistent fast back and forth, turning on a dime, lateral motion anymore. Think about the energy and confidence of this man, to first play mind games like that at the face off before the opening bell, to get right into his opponents face like he's about to go to war, then to come out fighting like that. This is something completely unexpected from Pryor and it creates an edge of your seat intensity from the opening bell like you just can't take your eyes off it, and you can't wait to see what happens next with him using this strategy. In today's boxing, you don't get this feeling anymore that you get when watching that.
Archie Moore vs Yvon Durelle 1 This content is protected Moore down three times in first 1, but he won by knockout in the 11th round.
The thing about having crazy round 1s is that, when a boxing match has a crazy round 1, you're instantly glued to the action from the opening bell, and it makes the whole rest of the match that much more engaging and interesting. So many matches these days have slow starts and only get going after a number of rounds, and then it's over before you know it, many times before you really get into it. To have a crazy opening round, or a crazy start to the opening round, and then from that point it becomes something even more memorable. Even if it doesn't end up going the distance, the feeling of being instantly glued to the match from the opening bell, not just because you're excited about the fight, but because something in that opening round happened that was completely unexpected and shocking even, is something very rare. Boxing matches even with slow starts are still entertaining and engaging, but not to the level of when the beginning of the round 1 starts off with something crazy, or some fireworks at the start of a match. Knowing that something crazy happened so early on in a match with so many rounds potentially to go, that creates an unbelievable amount of excitement.
