Hatton was actually fairly skilled in his own right. Did a decent job of closing the distance and cutting off the ring behind the jab. Chavez was very skilled, both in terms of setting up his offense and using his defensive ability to take the steam out of his opponent's shots.
You're crying over a myth. Meyran counted at the exact same speed when Tyson and Douglas made their separate trips to the canvas during their fight. Dougas got up in time and showed that he was capable of carrying on. The same couldn't be said for Tyson. :deal
Douglas, like Tunney in 1927, could have risen earlier, but both had the smarts to take advantage of every second afforded them by the referee and carried on to win. Buster, was nearly flawless that night in tokyo, and even with his one snafu in getting decked, showed what a great challenger was made of by getting up to clean tyson's clock. i long ago got sick of that **** about how lucky Douglas was that night..yeah, he just landed a kazillion lucky punches, that's all.
Agreed, Douglas boxed beautifully. Exceptional use of the jab, great footwork, masterful in the clinch...Tyson would have struggled, period, no matter whether he decided to train as hard as he could of. He may have been unfocused and undertrained, but he was far better than his fans like to paint that night. Easy to not look like yourself when you are getting your ass handed to you by a guy you stupidly took lightly. And the long count non controversy? Any good boxing trainer will tell you, if you get decked, DO NOT GET UP RIGHT AWAY. If your brains aren't clear, and you haven't atleast gathered your composure, you could mis-step, stagger, etc, and a jumpy ref might call you stopped. Get to a knee, or get to a place where you at least feel you can stand quickly(I.e., not flat on your back), and wait for the referee to hit 8. Then, stand up. Douglas even handled getting dropped like a consummate pro that night.
I never understood the call on the count of Douglas vs Tyson. Douglas could have goting up any time he wanted. Don King try to over turn the result with the claim, Tyson knock Douglas out, before Douglas knock Tyson out. Only the WBA was waiting in the King arugment in that regard imo. Do you recall how long it took for the annoucement of the winner? Myth is King was aruging his case to the commisson there.
I may be a little off here but i kinda remember the IBF bein the only ones to officially recognise Douglas at the end of the fight. The others followed suit after realising how stupid they looked in not doing so
