Archie Moore was 6 months older than Joe Louis and he fought young Cassius Clay, so clearly you can see that the time gap between these two ATG is not that big.
I'm interested in the longest time frame possible from men who were active during Moore's career. Several guys who went pro in 1919 were still active when Moore began his career and Ali had his last fight in 1981. That's 62 years with one guy acting as the common link! The fact that Moore had over 200 fights in a career that lasted 28 years in the mid 20th century is truly one of the most remarkable feats in boxing history.
If we’re looking for actual connective tissue, Moore fought Johnny “Bandit” Romero (at least a couple of times) and Romero turned pro in 1927. So he fought a guy who turned pro in ‘27 and a guy who retired after fighting in ‘81.
Archie Moore improving enough to go 5-4-1 (per Cincinnati Enquirer) against Charles who shut him out 10-0 two years prior. That's a crazy fact that should be taught to the zero hugging young boxers. Charles felt a trilogy is needed, and perhaps he was right given how the majority decision arguably could go to Moore if not for the fact that they fought in Ezzard's hometown.
Ali fought Moore, who turned pro in 1935, and Holmes who had his last fight in 2002 - a time span of almost 67 years!
Archie is an all time great! Now...if you've got 10 fights under your belt...you're a "world champion"...PATHETIC!
Arch passed away when he was virtually 85 years old for YOB 1913 or 82 for YOB 1916. Either way, he lived to a very good age and I am not aware of any reports that he suffered any undue mental decline. That’s a great thing for any person of that same age but incredibly more so for a man who engaged in so many fights over the course of a very long career.
Hi Buddy. When asked who he rated, who was the best he fought, he didn't reply, Charles, or Marciano, Patterson, Clay, Booker, Jack Chase, Holman Williams, Lytell, Aaron Wade, Bivins, Marshall, none of the above, it was Charley Burley , heard of him . stay safe guys.
