I watched it with Russian commentary so I had no bias put on my by the commentators, it was one of the closests fights I have ever seen geniunely, I was amazed by this as no round in this fight was more than 65/35 to either fighter. Overall i had it 115-113 or 114-114 to Usyk. 1. Briedis 2. Briedis 3. Usyk 4. Usyk 5. Usyk 6. Briedis 7. Usyk 8. Briedis 9. Briedis 10. Usyk 11. Usyk 12. Usyk Some of these were so close that you could easily swap a few. One of the few times I reallt felt like I had no clue what scores the judges will have, it was literally 55/45 to usyk Briedis really impressed me with his accuarcy and timing, before the fight I thought it was gonna be 9-3 to Usyk but boy did Mairis prove me wrong. Usyk though could have thrown more uppercuts.
Yeah, it was a good fight and could’ve been so much better if Briedis was able to keep up the pace and fight same way he fought in first 4.
Exactly, Round 12 was constant output by both. So glad I decided to watch it after missing it yesterday
Looking at the punch stats his pace was pretty consistent throughout, he threw less in rounds 1-4, than in rounds 5-8 and 9-12. Difference was Usyk threw even more and Briedis clearly was feeling the pace and the power and snap in his punches were not the same as in those early rounds. There were times he was throwing nothing but arm punches just trying to look busy, while Usyk shots were usually thrown with more authority and intent. Brilliant fight though and it makes you wonder how Usyk would of coped against an opponent with the conditioning to fight at the same intensity for 12 rounds. Usyk was far too easy to hit in this fight.
Agree, what started out with Briedis moving good, creating openings for himself and throwing with mean intentions, turned in some form of punching for punchings sake. Usyk turned up the heat (after what looked like intentional taking of punishment to gass Briedis) and thats where Mairis slowed down and got his nose blodied. 2 rounds after that his corner asked him if he’s gotten back to his senses, so something in rounds 4-5 did shake him up. He still showed heart and even while noticably tired never gave up and stole a few more rounds, for that he gets mad respect even in defeat. If he had a better tank, what happened in rd12 wouldve happened sooner - Usyk gassed too. From there your guess is as good as mine but it certainly would be even greater thriller
Yeah I said the same last night, he definitely allowed Briedis to punch himself out on his arms and then when he felt Briedis was tiring cranked it up a level to win the round. It was kind of his version of rope a dope, it was a smart tactic.
