You don't know much about Liston outside the ring...

Please ...I've read the same crap you have for the past forty years ... I also saw him turn into a dog in Miami and dive in Maine ... I'm not saying he wasn't a street thug ... just not on my all time team ...

Please nothing. Writing Liston off as a prison thug "who runs" whenever someone "stands up to him" is stupid.

Liston was a bully who quit on his stool and gave up the heavyweight championship of the world ... I guess that is Marciano style courage to you ... not to me ... typical prison style front runner ... having to make your argument in the above manner is stupid ...

    ...

Bully. I was waiting for someone to use that old, played-out, Dundee slander about Liston. Why am I not surprised that it is you?

You're wrong. Emphatically so. Wait until my shadow self reads that post. It's gonna feel like Liston slapped you with one of those ham hock hands of his.

You shopuld have known it would be me? Who the **** are you? I'm sorry, next time I'll be careful what I write when your having your period...

Internet loud mouths voicing opinions in childlike rants highlighted with personalized attacks do not change the facts. The man quit on his stool and gave up his title when he easily could have continued. This is acknowledged by boxing scholars worldwide.... you are good for some laughs though ...

why not offer your version of what happened in Miami?

The bottom line is, leaving Liston out of your imagined street gang on account off he kept his seat v Ali is pretty poor judgement. Outside of the ring he is as made for this kind of thing as any other American. He came up in a share cropping family and he pulled the plow. He was lashed when he pulled it. It was nt possible for him to quit in those circumstances.

He fought police-officers and he fought criminals and some say he enforced for the mafia. I wouldn't include the Ali version of Liston in this gang, but leaving out the Whitehurst version on account of the Ali fights is pretty dumb.

And yes, he was a bully. But he was a proffesional fighter, too. And he won more than he lost and during his peak years he hammered the best there was. Perhaps a little more respect is in order.

.... No need to get upset....

In Miami, Liston failed to train with any seriousness whatsoever because he expected Clay (the "loudmouth" ahem) to fold inside of a few rounds. Clay didn't and took over the fight rapidly. Liston took a sustained beating, probably knew that his cutman was rubbing solution on the gloves, and gave up the ghost when it was clear to him that he wasn't going to hear the final bell.

In Maine, the wiseguys cashed in on him and he was told to take a dive. You don't say 'no' to those guys.

I know Liston's career very well. You evidently don't. I know about Liston's public life and much about his private life. You evidently don't.

Your statement that I first responded to remains stupid. If you take that personally, then so be it. But when you write sloppy slander, expect to be called on it.

McGrain, I am not saying Liston was not a great fighter on many nights and I am not saying he was not a very tough guy ... I thought the question, which I happen to think is very good and original, is each guys opinion on their toughest .... I hold back Liston and Tyson because in my opinion even though both were great for periods of their careers I also feel they had moments where I question their inner fortitude ... I know their histories extremely well, I know their ring accomplishments and their places in history ... they are just not my toughest ...

Now I thank you for making an intelligent argument without personal attacks. It makes the board much more interesting and fun .. any jerkoff can play keyboard tough guy ... interesting arguments make this place simply better ...

Stone ... this is how weak your argument is ... you attack me first .. then you are forced to admit that your fighter was a quitter who handed over the heavyweight championship of the world in disgraceful fashion and then you say I don't know my Liston history ... very weak ...
