I was thinking about this the other day guys, and this is actually not that easy, because there are plenty of ways you could go about this and tons of fighters with attributes that are fantastic defensive attributes. I'll have a crack: Speed (hand and foot): Roy Jones Reflexes: Roy jones Punch "awareness": Wilfredo Benitez Shoulder roll/slip: Archie Moore (honarable mention James Toney) Make you miss: Willie pep Defensive footwork: Pernell whitaker There are plenty of other attributes that are beneficial in a defensive sense too, so see what you can come up with Sage
Speed-Taylor Reflexes-RJJ Punch Awareness-Loche Shoulder Roll-Mayweather Make you Miss-Loche or Whitaker defensive footwork-Pep rolling with punches-Roberto Duran Head movement-Roberto Duran
Jack Johnson + Pernell Whitaker + Wilfred Benitez = just about as great a defensive fighter as you'll get fundamentally.
I rate Tyson's a tad better. What about Frazier? he had pretty damn good head movement, he'd be in the reckoning.
Head movement: Mike Tyson Shoulder roll: Floyd Mayweather JR (James Toney) Reflexes: Roy Jones JR Footwork: Muhammad Ali Punchawarness: Floyd Mayweather JR Make you miss: Pernell Whitaker (Bernard Hopkins)
My problem with Tyson is that his moves are often very exaggerated, and he turns his body with his head whilst planting his feet. You would need to have ice in your viens as well as superb accuracy but Tyson could be timed. His head movement was not arbitary. This is becase it was born off specialisation, Tyson is trained to slip the jab - a specific punch. But Tyson doesn't always look to ditch specific shots. His job is to present a moving target, one that is difficult to hit clean, but he often followed a pattern of movement. Dempsey was superior because he showed the same moving target without turning his upper body to much. His movements were much "easier". This meant that if an opponent timed him - which was harder anyway, because Dempsey's movements were much more arbitary - he suffered less harsh consequences. Secondly, Dempsey reacted where Tyson just acted, at least against Willard. Frazier, I don't rate in the same league in this department. He's a rythym based fighter, that's how he got in and how he got his best work done, but as Foreman showed, he was vulnerable. Rythm based fighters can suffer in one of two ways - having that rythm broken or getting timed. Demspey is the opposite of a rythym based fighter - Tyson lies in the no-man's land in between. This is why I see Tyson shading Dempsey in this department.
Head movement: Sweet Pea Shoulder roll: Floyd Mayweather Reflexes: Roy Jones Footwork: Sweet Pea Punch awareness: Floyd Mayweather (by far the greatest) Make you miss: Sweet Pea Counterpunching: A prime Tyson (with an honorable mention to a prime Hopkins)
Take Oliver McCalls Chin, then you need no defense Perhaps a mix between Hopkins, Mayweather,Toney and Henry Maske.
Speed: Jones Jr. Head movement: Benitez/Canto Shoulder roll: Locche Reflexes: Jones Jr./Canto Footwork: Pep Punch awareness: Locche/Benitez Elusiveness: Locche/Whitaker Counterpunching: Whitaker/Jones Jr. Blocking/Parrying: Wright
