It seems Marciano trained the "wrong way" if he actually did do this. No reason for a fighter to run that far and with that amount volume

Thanks for this. So still a lot of running, but Peter exaggerated a bit. He probably counted all the walking Rocky did with Columbo post runs

That's plenty of running for a fighter and still leaves him with plenty of energy for the rest of the training day.

More to the point, I have found two descriptions of his roadwork as being quick walking mixed with sprinting uphills... Very Modern! (I know, Fitzsimmons did it, too)

Well said reasoning ... not running 10-15 miles a day doesn't in any way make Marciano a lesser fighter or denigrate his accomplishments. Doesn't mean he didn't train hard either. It's just when such a LARGE number is thrown out, it does tend to draw doubt; especially with running and the drain it has on lean muscle tissue and recovery. ANYTHING is certainly possible, but likelihood is another matter entirely.

Legends are like fishing stories - the more time that passes, the bigger they become. That 270 lb heavy bag has been variously described as up to 400 or 500 lbs ...

The difficulty that you have reconstructing a fighters regime is that they do not do the same thing every day.

A fighter might run twenty miles on Tuesday, but do no road work on Wednesday.

Most camp observers are seeing a snap shot or two, which might not tell you the whole picture.

Could Marciano have done 70-100 miles per week as part of his training regime.

Theoretically yes, I do it and hold down a full time job, and still participate in other sports.

    Did he do it?

    I would guess probably not.

Anyone have anything on his diet? Was Goldman admonishing him for extra late-night bananas and junk food a late-career-in-training-camp thing, or did he treat Marciano like that throughout his career?

Did any contemporary sources ever have Marciano weighing more than 200 pounds?

This. Marciano was obsessed with training and also wouldn't have any contact with his wife and children until his training camp was complete.

Charley Goldman talking about Marciano before the Harry Matthews fight.

"The modern fighter doesn't want to work. This guy loves it and loves to fight. He walks ten miles a day. Most modern guys don't walk ten miles in a month. This fellow wants to be a real fighter.
