What's the point of walking ten miles a day?

Light exercise for the whole body and great for stretching out the knees, neck, shoulders, and feet. Also, walking those miles regularly is great for gradually building long distance stamina. It really does work and explains why Marciano is the only undefeated heavyweight champ. Whether in training or out of training Marciano still got his walking in.

My old football coach served with Maricano in the 40's and insisted on everyone on the team walking at least 5-10 miles a day on top of practice and for whatever reason he could always tell if you hadn't been walking.

    Ben Bentley, Rocky's Friend
"Rocky would normally run at least 5-6 miles a day year round, but when a fight was signed he'd increase the distance to 9-10 miles, and usually the last week up it to 12-15 miles. On top of this, he liked to walk another 5-10 miles in the late afternoon or evening. And he did all this in the hilly country around Grossinger's, where he trained.
It was Rocky's obsession with conditioning that kept him training 365 days a year and this dedication gave him stamina never seen before or since in a fighter. It allowed him to set a blistering pace that no fighter could match."

Agreed, modern training would make a difference in their knowledge of kinesiology and the benefits of modern training and the destructive nature of some....descriptions of Marciano in training sounds like an OCD personality. Today he may have run less and used weights and core strength training to stabilize his posterior chain.

Obviously he and his team would have to decide on which division today and whichever one that is then we have to recognize the character of the Rock would be the same his will to win would remain and so would his work ethic the only difference would be how would he apply his will to win with the modern knowledge of how to exploit it and under modern rules and equipment

Steak and potatoes and Spring water from the mountains with the occasional puff of the pipe, just like the great Harry Greb, Tommy Gibbons, Packey McFarland, James Jeffries, Bob Fitzsimmons, Benny Leonard, Charley Burley, James Corbett and Sandy Saddler.

None of your protein shakes that these modernist's use today!

Walking doesn't do much, I train dogs, before I knew what I was doing I would walk them 6/7 miles, then I progressed to jogging them with the bike, ten times more beneficial. Marciano was undeniably super fit but this," blistering pace ,"is overstated,he fought at a measured pace, slower for instance that that set by fellow swarmers like Dempsey,Frazier,Tyson, where he scored was in his ability,[through conditioning,] to maintain it.
Let's also not forget that, by and large he was fighting older men who were under 200lbs, push pulling /bulling such opponents in the clinches is decidedly different to doing the same to prime guys over 200lbs.

Peter Marciano told me the same thing...Izzy Gold as well. The Rock worked like a demon in the gym to get to 189lbs. He felt so strong at that weight.

The 10-15 miles a day running is 100% horsesh*t. I have listed numerous firsthand accounts from various training camps that consistently attest to between 5 and 6 miles of roadwork a day, and not even all of that running but a mix of walking and running. In fact, and I will find this article again, a certain reporter spent listed Rocky's daily schedule in training for Moore, and dare I say, it seemed pretty easy for a full time athlete.

But go ahead and believe the always reputable Peter Marciano and remember to get tucked in at night. Sweet dreams.

Hey, here is yet another remarkably consistent statement on Rocky's roadwork...

From the Aug 21, 1955 Boston American...

"There is a radical difference in roadwork. Rocky used to always run five or six miles uphill. Now he does the same distance on the flat. Originally he wanted to build up strength in his legs He feels that he's got all the power he needs and now he is concentrating on speed-thus the flat running."

But, please, feed me some more tall tales from Peter M.

Angelo Dundee said that Goldman had Marciano do a squat in front of the heavy bag. As he came up from it he would throw punches. He would do this over and over.

    Try it sometime.

Marciano ran 5-6 miles a day year round and would gradually increase it to 9-10 miles a day in the later stages of his training camp. Marciano would only run 10-15 miles a day in his last week of camp.
