Yeah. The only other thing I would work on with him (with punching technique and conditioning) is gameplan. It was obvious what Gassiev's plan was. So next time maybe Dorticos can pace himself a bit more.
Absolutely deserves credit. He took some hellish punches and kept coming and coming, and kept punching and dangerous. The Cruiserweight division is really strong, and I can see him as one of the major players after Usyk and Gassiev stepped up. Great fight!
Showed a ton of heart but other than his power he's a very ordinary, straight ahead fighter with no shrewdness or surprises. Could only get off when Gassiev was stationary and even then he didn't really seem to be putting much thought into placing his shots. Some more jabs, feints, and body punches would have gone a long way.
His lack of ring IQ will probably never get him over the hump at the top level. He has too much length to be sitting there trying to walk down a more compact and explosive fighter using the same jab cross rhythm the whole fight, with little in terms of punch variety. He would have been better off boxing from the outside, having all of you complain about him stinking the fight up, but winning a decision using his jab.
Fair point. You might be right, particularly because he has so much power. It takes a lot of discipline to box when you have such heavy hands. I truly wish him the best and hope to see him around for a long time.
Jabbing with the occasional right cross from a distance, sticking and moving, is how you fight a guy like Gassiev, if you are the taller lankier guy. If you are going to try and walk him down, you better have some punch variety, and infighting ability. He didn't have much of either.
Dorticos is a warrior through and through. I was worried about him because he was still wincing in pain 7 minutes after the final bell.
He's a ridiculously tough guy, but he has to get out of Miami and work with some new people. The Cubans who have made long careers, Lara, Ortiz, Cassamayor, worked with people outside of their circle. The thing is a vaunted Cuban amateur got outboxed off the back foot by a dude with 25 amateur fights. It was jab-cross jab-cross all night, like an amateur. You can't accuse the guy of taking steroids, either. He could use work on his body. he needs to work out differently. Get more flexible, work on his reflexes.
