Credit to Rees and Lockett

Rees was brave and took the fight to Broner, but I don't think he did anything extraordinary. Broner was toying with Rees and could have finished the fight a lot earlier if he had wanted.

I know Rees landed some shots early on, but they were so lacking in power, he would have had to have kept up the performance for the full 12 rounds for it to mean much. As it was he was all done quite early in the fight, no dragging Broner into the trenches, soaking it up for round after round.

I can't knock Rees, though, he came to fight and didn't go into his shell at all. As for Lockett, he seems to be decent enough as a trainer, and seems good in the corner. However, I'm not so sure he is capable if instilling an "Eye of the Tiger" type of attitude that is needed to make a serious dent in superior opponents like Broner.

 

Would like to see Rees fight Mitchell next, don't think it could be made though. European and British champion still and a former world champ, got plenty to offer still.

 

I guess those 80-1 odds were correct.Rees and Lockett way out of their depth.Back to the Euro's for them.

 

Shitty comments there from you. What more did you expect of Rees? He simply is nowhere near as good a Broner. Are you shitting on him for not being as talented a boxer as you wish him to be or what?

Not every boxer is world class, all you can ask of them is their best and I couldn't see Rees being any more successful than he was last night.

 

Both Gary and Gavin are a credit to the sport just beaten by the better man,no disgrace whatsoever with that.

 

Gavin did himself proud and went out fighting.

Think Rees did great,but I think he was up against a man who pound for pound was as good as a 23yr old Ali.Honestly,think hes too good for our lads around the weight and above,all of them.And shut Angel Garcias mouth if it happened tomorrow.
Also,dont think Lockett should come in for any criticism,he wanted to stop it a round earlier.Any later would have been wrong.Loved the crowd cheering Rees efforts,there were only a few Welsh there.Broner is cocky,with good reason,but gave Gavin respect after,in his own way.Turned out well,I thought.
For Rees,would like him to have a few domestic fights now.Murray would be great if he comes back,or Mitchell.If he retired,would have had a great run.

However, I wonder if Rees spent too much time over in the U.S. and lost a little sharpness what with the change in environment and food.

Perhaps if they'd have airfreighted over a supply of battered sausages for the Rees training camp, he'd have had that little bit more quality and stamina.

 

He showed real grit & determination. Most would have stayed down after that uppercut knockdown but he got up & went straight back in the trenches for the next round. That showed true character. If David Haye showed some of that against Klitchko instead of playing this little piggy, we would have seen alot better fight there.

 

So it's brave for a boxer to "do their best?"

I would say that's the least that should be expected.

It's a weak and defeatist mentality that celebrates people not totally capitulating and running all night.

Rees was over-matched but did his job and didn't embarrass himself. All this fawning over him is cringeworthy and embarrassing. He got paid, he doesn't need the sentimentalism displayed here.

Arthur Abraham fighting on with his jaw hanging off was brave.

I don't really think I would say Rees is braver than other boxers because all boxers are brave and gutsy. Broner outclassed Rees as expected.

No, but Rees was disrespected so much in the buildup, THAT is what was embarrassing, like Eddie Hearn said, it was bordering on abuse, many, MANY American fight fans went from "who the **** is Gavin Rees? some Eurobum?" to "hey that Gavin Rees is one tough little mother****er isn't he?"
