Just going to reply to a few key points. * Thornton had defeated his share of contenders, and had run Eubank close when they fought. In fact, a lot of people at the time thought "that goddamned mailman" deserved the nod against Chris. He was a serviceable, lower echelon contender- probably not deserving of the number one ranking accorded to him by the IBF, but not someone to be dismissed, either. *Paz was a former lightweight, but he was a popular former lightweight who was ranked at SMW, and would continue to be ranked following a one punch kayo of an undefeated Dana Roseblatt. More sizzle than steak, but there's enough substance there to make the victory worthwhile. *Malinga and Lucas may not have been well regarded at the time, but neither were that far removed from the form that allowed them both to win titles. Both serviceable victories, imo. *Yeah, Jones gets credit for how he looked during that time period. If Eubank and Toney couldn't put away The Mailman, and RJJ did, that's a feather in his cap. Same applies for Harris, Brannon, Thomas, et al. You can criticize who Jones fought, but how he dealt with them was beyond critique. * Would have been nice to see a few of the names mentioned on RJJ's SMW resume. But Nunn's credibility at the time was damaged by losses to Little and Liles. Liles was promoted by King, who wasn't in a hurry to match any of his fighters with RJJ. Eubank, Benn and Collins seemed content to engage in a round robin with one another on the other side of the pond. G-Man and RJJ were friends, and probably weren't inclined to face each other as a result. And Jackson was pretty much done by that point. Bad timing, and a bad set of circumstances led to some nice match-ups not being made at 168. He still deserves credit for facing and defeating the number one guy in the division by a pretty astounding margin..but it would indeed have been nice to see him face the next best contender after Toney. Still, it's a little bit better, on the whole, than I had expected it to be in terms of quality, given that he basically moon-lighted there until 94, and only stuck around till 1996. The work he did during that time isn't that bad, given that context.
You honestly have to be kidding. ..Do you honestly think if you keep repeating some of the same **** people will think diffrently? When was he going to fight the Gman ? Before or after his injury ? Because the only time they could have fought was after the Benn fight maybe Jones should have went to the hospital and forced the fight.. Hopkins and Dm gtfo out of here with that repetitive ****.. Dm never wanted the fight nor did Hopkins His resume is better than both of them I find it laughable as to who Questions his careeer I mean Calazaghr fana really ..Enough with your agendas..
Serge, Another great post. I always enjoy reading them. Well I can't fathom it out. Did he cop out because things were getting too much? Or did he cop out to spite Roch? Do you know what their relationship was like? Were they friendly and respectful? Or was there bad blood between them? It seems very strange that Dariusz would have behaved like that, because he was a hard man. He looks even harder these days. I've not seen his brother. Eubank was the guy who I loved to hate. Until I got out of my teens. Do you think that he bit of more than he could chew with that deal he signed, where he was fighting every few months or so? I think it was too much to take on. He had some close fights with Schommer and Close. I can't recall that to be honest. But you could see why. I can't watch fights without audio. I can't watch porn without any audio. The defeat to Byron Mitchell was towards the end of his career. I'm no expert on Liles, but I think he'd have given Roy a tougher fight than Roch. Although I read an interview where Roy said he wouldn't have fancied fighting him. He said he'd rather fight Dariusz than him. I'll be honest, I don't know a great deal about Henry Maske. But I know he was a very good-great fighter and was highly respected. Great info. He wouldn't have been a walk in the park for anyone. Do you know what year that quote was from? I read upon him a bit over the weekend, and I found out that after he'd retired, he'd drove his car after a drink, and he fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed it. He was lucky not to have killed himself. The whole WBC fiasco was crazy. You know I'm one of Roy's biggest fans, but how on earth did they end up giving him his belt back, after Roch had beaten Nunn for it? How much money did Roch receive? Was it an undisclosed amount? :good
Glen Johnson knocked out Roy for 6 minutes. and Johnson was never a KO artist or power puncher. Jones had no Chin. None.
You've made over 17,000 posts. I'm guessing that at least half of those posts, must each contain the sentence - Roy had no chin. None. If you're not going to have a proper debate, go and stink up another thread.
Roy clearly avoided savage punchers and pressure fighters. His blueprint was to avoid them at all costs and he did. His fans are going to have to live with that. Jones has nobody to blame but himself.
Roy Jones had devastating power at 160-168. I believe Foreman said he moved like a lightweight and hit like a heavyweight.
Very few of my 17,000 posts have anything to do with Roy or Chins. When people try and have a proper debate with you for some reason you like to ignore Facts or tell us you knew what Roy or another fighter was 'thinking'. Or you just make up absurd excuses for Roy's despicable actions. Jones had a carefully crafted career it is obvious by how and when he manipulated his way through weight classes somehow never fighting a savage puncher or never being THE champion of any Division he fought in.
He had no chin. None. It was made of glass. He started out at 160, and in 1991, he fought at 154. Yet at 34, after 50 fights, he fought a 226 pound HW, who'd dropped Evander. Do you think that a 226 pound HW, isn't a big puncher, to a 34 year old LHW? Now please go away. :hi:
There's literally no point in me debating with you. MindReader has gots lots more patience with you than I have, and even he struggles with you. I haven't made any absurd excuses up. If you actually read the thread in it's entirety, I've listed actual facts that have been backed up by numerous links and videos. I've posted actual evidence, alongside my logical opinions. I have also never pretended that I possess psychic powers. Don't reply to me again. I can't debate with a guy that spews out hate, instead of using objectivity.
The sign of a truly elite fighter is the ability to make top fighters look ordinary, and Roy did that.
