Yeah, until he felt sh*t against Hopkins after his own weight loss, and had to claim that he may have been poisoned.
Look, there's zero doubt that Roy was a good fighter but there's no way anyone can claim he didn't take the easy route every time he was able to.
Any of the other champions or #1 contenders for starters... Lucky for him he was KTFO by a 175 pounder instead of a 220+ pounder.
you have got to be delusional to think Roy wanted to fight anyone. It wasn't just DM he didn't fight it was other Americans also. There is a long detailed history of Roy pricing himself out of fights, making unrealistic demands, etc so fights would get killed and not happen. Kerry Davis also said Jones was trying to offer 90/10 purse splits to opponents which HBO said they couldn't even do. Jones then would fight 'Mandatory' fights against no hopers and showboat and then tell us all how good he was. When he finally did step up he started getting brutally and embarrassingly KOed. That wasn't a coincidence.
And that the Tarver fight was a robbery, and how Roy vowed to never fight anyone else who had a chance to beat him... I don't have time for this knucklehead.
Um, yes it makes tons of sense. He got stripped, Guthrie fought someone else for the title, and then that person fought Jones. Why would he fight a nobody like Guthrie when he no longer had to? A lot of you aren't following the source info: The winner of Hill vs DM was pre-mandated to fight Guthrie by a certain date, which ended up being 30 days or so after their fight. It was never going to happen and they used it as an excuse to strip him. It's not complicated at all.
If he could of had a head transplant he'd be in a lot better shape over the longevity of his career. Well, I suppose a chin implant too.
Change the record dude. You think Tarver and Johnson were a step up? For one, Tarver lost his chance at fighting Roy in 2000 when Harding broke his jaw... Roy would go on to beat Harding.. And I can't count how many fighters Roy beat that holds wins over G. Johnson... It wasn't a step up, it was a decline in Jones.
Still the most talented fighter i ve seen in the ring. Honestly believe theres a misconception about roys career. In that a lot more people dodged or ducked him rather than the other way about. And for good reason. Roy was better than them all as good as they were
