I'm not a fan of Cortez, I think he likes the spotlight too much. However, for this fight, I think he did quite well. The only complaint I have about his performance was the 3rd round, when he was jumping in way too much but the rest of the fight, he was consistently fair to both fighters, warning both fighters for holding and elbows. Thoughts?
Cortez was over the top in the first few rounds. There were at least a couple of occasions where he was breaking clinches that hadn't actually happened yet. He seemed to settle down a bit later. If he'd refereed the whole fight like he did the last two thirds of it, I doubt it would get mentioned. Although he did overlook Mayweather's elbows and the points deduction was crap. The real problem with Cortez's refereeing is highlighted when you compare his handling of that fight to others that he has done. The contrast with his approach to Hopkins' holding v Calzaghe is laughable, for instance. That leads to the unavoidable conclusion that he varies his style of refereeing (and, specifically, which rules he applies with which severity) depending on who the fighters are. It is impossible for a referee to do that and there not to be suspicions as to his motives.
Cortez was horrible in Hatton Mayweather He's also been **** and made horrendous mistakes for the last 18 months. He should be cordoned off and pulled out of all big fights.
Cortez did what he was supposed to do. Holding is illegal in boxing, and he didn't let Ruiz hold either. If you depend on wrestling in the boxing ring, you don't want Joe Cortez to be the ref.
That exactly misses my point though. If Cortez actually did referee all his matches to the same consistent standard then, even if people did disagree with that particular standard, they couldn't doubt his motives. He doesn't do that.
The main thing he did incorrectly was to break clinches that weren't actually happening. He was correct to break quickly when Hatton was holding and hitting, which he does a lot. However, he wasn't consistent in applying the same theories when it came to Hopkins doing the same types of thing.
He wasnt as bad as people make him out to be that night. He did have a bad moment or two when Floyd and Hatton were exchanging punches in the middle and Cortez would just break them apart for no reason at all.
Unless you're Bernard Hopkins ? :huh tbh I just think he's a **** ref and always has been, loves attention a bit too much too.
Cortez is as biased as they come, if he were in wrestling another guy would run down the ring and perform a finisher on him
he did allow a fair bit of holding in that match, just not as much as Hatton usually is allowed. I like Hatton and everything, but come on, if a ref stops him from holding, he's just doing his job.
