He implented the rules, fighters are supposed to be broken when they hold, they arent supposed to excessively hold, Jim Watt was a Hatton fan and knew Ricky's best shot was to hit and hold. As it was Hatton did get to hold and in fight, he just wasnt allowed to wrestle as much as he likes too. Hatton has fragantly abused the rules with hometown referees for years and it was never going to be allowed in the biggest fight of the year The only mistakes Cortez made was on 2 occasions he split them before they actually held, but with the amount of times he had to seperate them this is understandable though. There was also the moment Ricky was disciplined for hitting behind the head, he didnt land the behind the head punch but the intent was there and Cortez couldnt see if it landed Cortez had also been critisised for favouring Ricky Hatton's rough house tactics and play acting against Castillo and wasnt going to let it slip twice. Billy Graham also tried to ask Cortez in a round about way about in-fighting/wrestling/holding in the pre-fight instructions People try to draw comparisons with the Calzaghe-Hopkins fight - Cortez split them just the same and didnt allow them to hold/wrestle either
I've only watched the fight once, if I recall, and I was drunk as hell. I don't remember there being any significant bias, but I'd need to watch it again.
Cortez did a good job reffing what was a difficult fight to officiate. Both men were using foul tactics and Cortez stayed far throughout. Hatton fans have run with the ball that Cortez cost Hatton the fight against Mayweather - when it reality - it was Mayweather's left hook that cost Hatton the fight.
I agree with the last 2/3 of it part but he did warn Mayweather for elbows as well. The point deduction was crap, for a fight of this magnitude, just let them settle it. I haven't seen the Hopkins-Calzaghe fight so I'll withhold judgement until then.
