[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKMpqEsaL-8[/ame] A video of me sparring at the gym. I am the one in the red headgear with the black top, i have been boxing for four months, the other boxer has been boxing for 2 years this was about learning for me, he was letting me practise moving and not pressuring too hard. Any feedback would be nice, thanks. P.S Sorry for the twat at 2:15
need to put more combinations together. is okay to use your jab to keep range, but when you decide to strike you have to throw more then just a 1, or a 2 and then move out. and you need to commit to the punches more. need to keep yourself from turning too much when punches coming at you. you got hit a few times in the back, the kidney, by body hooks because of it, and as well a few near the back of the head. It will also cause you to walk into punches. But this will change with more sparring and time so just be mindful of it. Try to not let your head (chin) get up to high either when throwing, or that could end up painful too. Keep it tucked in a bit more. got lots to work on, but the good news is, you've only been doing it for 4 months and all your mistakes are noob mistakes and expected and should get worked out with time and practice. i like that you were circling to the left against the south paw, so that kept his power away from you. keep working at it.
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, combinations definetly need work on. Hopefully should come with time, the advice i was given before sparring was "throw your 1-2's then move, 1-2 move" so hopefully combo's should come later. Yeah, im getting more sparring oppertunity's, i had sparred earlyer in the night with a boy who weighed the same as me (this boy is 7 kg more). Last friday i sparred 3 times (i do boxing twice a week at the club) and i try to sparr as much as i can. As i said, thanks for the feedback, ill post another video in a few months maybe.
you need more practice, you look uncomfortable in there and you were tripping over your feet/crossing your legs when moving left, you'll get comfortable over time but you have to practice your footwork some more, also when you're tall fight tall, there were a few times you moved your head unnecessarily and put yourself low enough for him to hit you.
When you move left, it's almost like you over pivot and then go sideways by stepping straight backwards. You don't have much balance that way. Also your footwork seems a bit off at times, I would recommend working on small steps forwards and backwards and leaving the big steps for lateral movement. You look good for someone who's only been at it for four months. You'll pick it up in no time. That's the thing about boxing, no matter how long you've been doing it, you'll continuously fine-tune your technique.
Yeah, thanks man, iv been told by both coaches that i have potential. I'm sparring with people who have been boxing from between 1-4 years usually so hopefully that should help. so things to work on: Footwork Combo's Fighting tall along with everything else.
You are doing great for 4 months. You look like you have a lot of "nervous" energy, but that will go away with more time in the ring. Boxing is a sport where 95% of us get out of it what we put into it, then there are the other 5% that are just sponges and pick up everything. My advice is to keep working and don't overanalyze it.:good
This. If you come down too low or punch down low then you will leave yourself open for attack. When were keeping it very light like that then there's no need to move too much/too quickly. Next time we sparr just keep it slow, and relaxed. :bbb
Will do. I may start putting up a video every 2/3 weeks to see how i progress. thanks for the feedback
You cant keep moving left. Youll actually find that if you turn your hips and feet right its a lot more comfortable to move right anyway.
You need to let your right hand go more, especially when you're sparring a south paw, they are also very susceptible to left hooks. Defense wise, you are forced to step back from a shorter opponent, and you managed to lead him, get him to follow you, very well. You must hunch your shoulders up, and bury your chin into your lead shoulder, and never, never stop looking at your opponent. You neutralised his strait left with your foot work nicely.
Your movement dosent seem fluent and you look out of your comfort zone. That should come with practice. You should have to move around that much you were the bigger guy try utilizing that jab more to measure space and keep your opponent off balance. I saw at one point you threw some kind of lone right straight crossed with a half committed right hand lead of some sorts. I would try not to do that again. The other main problem was you were throwing far to many punches that wernt landing , it seemed like you were throwing jabs and straights to stop the other guy coming in rather than to hit him. If you moved up a class in sparing partners they would start coming in and countering you when you do that. I think with practice everything will come. Try to do a little more practice on your movement just so everything flows and is comfortable to you. Dont be afraid to stand still and use the jab when your opponent is trying to come in. Some times it looked like you were about to pressure him but you seemed to flake off. If you land a jab or two step in and throw that right. If you are wanting to try and mix things up a little try standing with your opponent and shortening up your punches on the inside so that if they do back you up and you feel you cannt move you have a contingency plan. Keep us posted on how you come along , if you have only being boxing a few moths i am sure you will pick up everyones advice in no time.
