Some of the biggest names in MMA history (short as that may be) and the time has come for them to probably say their goodbyes. Three incredible legacies.
The upside of this is when these guys leave MMA's history begins to develop. One of the beauties of boxing is it's history. You get the nostalgic fans. MMA doesn't have that history. You got early guys like Kerr, Coleman and even Belfort still fighting. When these guys say goodbye to the sport, a new aspect of MMA will be born. It sounds silly but history is valued in all fields. MMA still hasn't got much depth in it's history but as a new generation of fighters and the even the science of the sport evolves, so will it's history.
True. Thankfully, it's already begun... which is why the time has come for them to walk away. They've been forced out, as competetive sport demands it to be.
Liddell and Cro should go. Winning now would tarnish their career cos it would make them look like they've still got it. Liddell is shot but Cro is mentally shot. Couture doesn't look the same against Nog but on paper he has one or two more fights in him. If he can beat Vera then Couture the product can be maintained. Plus Couture, unlike Liddell and Cro never based his appeal around invincibility. Chuck was the dominated 205 and Cro was the devastating kick boxer from Pride. Once those bubbles burst, a stream of losses came. Couture wins and loses and he's been that way from the start.
Sadly, there isn't much of a real legacy regarding the history of MMA, at least not to me. I could be wrong, and if anyone can show me otherwise feel free because I'm probably talking out of my ass, but all I can remember from the beginning of UFC and MMA as a sport was: "Human cockfighting" Some of the biggest names (Shamrock, Severn, Abbott) getting involved in pro wrestling However, the one BIG positive from MMA's history that I know of: Royce Gracie. Class act all the way, proved that technique beats size 99% of the time, and was a great pioneer for the UFC and mixed martial arts all together.
This is a big time for us MMA fans. This is the start of history for our new sport. You must think of when Williard and Johnson fought, those fans must of wondered what fighters would be like a hundred years from now.
