I've got a funny feeling about DeGale....He looks great when he's absolutely on top but a bit ragged when its coming back at him. I'm sorry to say, and its a terrible cliche but he looks like a horrid KO waiting to happen.....and given his status its likely to be live on national TV

Been my view of him from way before the Groves fight. He's stuck in a horrible between-styles way of fighting. McDonnell is a poisonous influence on the guy.

I still don't rate DeGale tbh. He's just.. not that good. :conf

But he got the stoppage win tonight and that's all he could do for now. Hopefully he gains a bit of confidence from this and can put some decent form together.

he isn't that good - this "potential" so many people see in him is entirely fictional. He's decent but he wouldn't have much of a hope against anyone in the top ten of the division (and unlike The Ring, I think George Groves has no place anywhere near the top ten).

Maybe in two years time, when he's sorted out his glaring flaws he might fight a top three guy and compete, but he's nowhere near that level right now.

I agree (this is becoming a habit, I blame the rum)...I never rated McDonnell as a trainer. The switch hitting is lame and he just can't pull it off. Was it the Coboll/Kabul/Kobol fight where he looked hurt and in danger, the one before the Groves fight?

Tonight's switch hitting i found lazy from James he'd pivot and instead of reseting would just go 'oh well, i'm in orthodox i'll box from this stance till i get enough space/time to reset'.

DeGale's a weird fighter, no doubt about that. Odd combination of hurtful looking well delivered punches and horrid slaps that Calzaghe wouldn't even have been proud of since unlike Calzaghe's which seemed to distract his opponents and score points on work rate they seem to serve no purpose.

Plus I don't think anybody has a clue whether he's an outfighter, an inside fighter or a counterpuncher. He seems to try all three but if anything the Groves fight showed he's not a particularly good outfighter because his jab is pretty horrible. Nor is he that good at counterpunching. To me he's best when he's in the pocket or fighting aggressively and I think that's what he needs to focus on rather than trying to be a slickster, as much as he'd like to be he's just not.

McDonnell's **** of course so the chances of improvement are not great. Punch technique should be tightened up by now, but it doesn't seem to have been...at all.

I'm sure it will come to end soon, Ice.

I think it was that fight. I think the majority of DeGale's flaws come from the sort of fighter he WANTS to be, rather than the fighter he actually is.

You call tell he likes the Mayweathers and Toneys of the world. Slick guys who rely on sharp countering that they create from a mix of offence and defence.

But DeGale is copying the surface without getting the structure. He sees the shoulder roll but doesn't know how to properly employ it and when (look at how Floyd used a high guard when he pressured Judah late in their fight). He sees the sharp snappy uppercuts but picks the wrong moments to uncork them. And he still gets backed up on to the ropes whenever he's under attack, but doesn't have the awareness Toney did to do as much damage from there as in the centre of the ring.

And McDonnell is encouraging this grab-bag of techniques without considering what DeGale needs to get on in his career.

Stay off Boxrec to avoid the result.

Did BoxNation show the Escalante vs. Camacho bout before this replay of Andrade vs. Bryant?
