How do we prevent another incident like this with Calfaggi? I don't wanna see another Sugar Ray Leonard type stoppage with pitty patty punches being thrown on the ropes.

apart from the manfredo stoppage, give me some more examples of premature stoppages and dodgy decisions in calzaghe fights.

mitchell was out on his feet, wasn't defending himself, wasn't throwing back and was only held up by the ropes when he went flying backwards.

Some might mention Sheika. I don't think that was a particularly bad stoppage, just that he was throwing punches unlike Peter "deer in the headlights" Manfredo. (Calzaghe was the biggest victim of that premature stoppage imo)

The assault on Calzaghe here is more effective than any attack anyone has mounted against him in the ring.He slaps, he this and that, yet no one has come close to beating him.Maybe Kessler will end his run , but to me , Joe earned his bones by reducing the much feared Lacy to a speed bag.

The manfredo fight wasn't even premature.

If a guy is sat on the ropes taking many punches and not fighting back then the guy deserves to be stopped whether the punches were clean or not and whether they are hurting or not.

In my opinion he was defending himself, and despite taking so many unanswered shots, he wasn't actually "taking" many at all. They were shitty pitty patter punches and in no way was he hurt.

If you want to get technical the ref had the right to stop it, but really it was so soft. Weak.

As someone else said it did Calzaghe more harm than good, as he would have just smashed manfredo anyway. But you cant just assume every fight.

Yep, Calzaghe would likely have knocked Peter flat out very soon if the referee wasn't an idiot.

Hate to break up all the wild speculation and posturing but have they announced the referee for this fight?
