Which of these divisions do you think is : A/ Better in quality right now B/ Has more prestige in boxing Personally I think both are let down by the fact that they have 4 World champions each, many of whom refuse to face each other and there doesnt appear to be any unification fights in the offing too soon. I feel both would benefit from some sort of super 6 style tournament to breathe life into the divisions. Shumenov to his credit suggested this but almost 2 years since nothing has come off it. Its king of pathetic you have guys happy to hold world titles and refuse to test themselves against other champions, preferring to hold the belt as long as possible even if that means sinking into irrelevance. Jones - Lebedev was a real war recently in the cruiser division. It attracted alot of attention although mainly due to Lebedevs injury but it was a terrific fight. I watched the Cruiserweight Prizeighter lately, although it was awful stuff, Wadi Camacho looked good I wonder could he be a potential world level operator? Theres not alot of quality out there as far as I see. Obviously Light Heavy holds more British interest with Bellew - Chilemba I and II , and Cleverly Krasniqi recently. Dawson is the best boxer in either division and Hopkins being the name and age he is brings alot of attention on this division. Hopefully Cleverley will have a unification fight soon, Bellew if he gets his world title fight will be interesting also. To be honest I've I've heard **** all about Afolabi seeing as hes British and Ring number 3 in the world. I've just seen hes fighting Huck for the WBO title next weekend, is that on British TV? Absolutely **** all noise about him or that fight. Best of luck to him. What time is that at?
Light heavy- more prestige because of its history and has bigger names at present Hopkins Dawson pascal cleverly(British viewpoint) and the future holds possible ventures from bute froch ward Kessler Cruiser-great action last 2/3 years jones-lebedev huck-afolabi huck-arslan Hernandez-Cunningham Hernandez-Ross it's more ignored because its based mainly in Europe so hasn't much spotlight in the USA There are worse divisions than both,British interest is in light heavy obviously and it's not a deep division Huck afolabi I'm sure will be boxnation,they show any good sauerland bill and showed the rematch
LHW is the better division I think. Many great fighters and good fights to make. But the Cruiserweight division is also not bad. It is just bad that this division is only "big" in germany. I think Huck-Afolabi could be on boxnation. I dont think Camacho will make big noise at world level. I just dont see anything special about him. His fight against Clark was bad and I dont think he is much better now.
i personally prefer to watch the cruiserweight. this is the most competetive its been for as long as i can remember and over the last 3 or so years has given us the more entertaining fights such as cunningham vs hernandez 1 & 2, hernandez vs ross, huck vs ofalabi 2 , huck vs lebedev, lebedev vs G jones. then you have rakhim chakhkeiv on the way up who is another explosive power house. Im not saying that light heavyweight is poor but i just think styles make fights and the cruisers have the more entertaining blend of fighters and also has alot more depth in the division. I think the next 2 to 3 years is going to be very exciting for the division but dont worry about the champions not fighting each other just now because they will just shortly .
Yeh I agree there are too many negative all out defensive fighters in Light Heavy. Chilemba really took the **** for me in his fights against Bellew, I had money on him 2nd time because I thought he underperformed in the 1st fight. But to be honest kind of glad he lost now, its better for the division Bellew is in contention and not Chilemba because as you say its about styles. Why is ofalabi not a "name" here? I'm not even talking a big name either, you hear more about domestic fighters than him?
Afolabi claims to be British as I think he was brought up here but he is also American/Nigerian/German so it's hard to identify with him even though he wears Union Jack shorts and wants to fight in Britain eventually The majority of his fights were in the USA and then he moved to Germany where cruiser weight is popular and is a sparring partner for wladimir klitschko The only time he has fought in Britain was as an away fighter against enzo I reckon Hearn or frank could do worse than offer him a contract but all the opportunities and money for him is in germany
LHW has the history but Cruiser has the more exciting fights. Totally agree that Afolabi should be bigger in the UK, like his style and his KO of Terry Dunstan was one of the most brutal I have seen since Julian Jackson KOd the Bomber
LHW was pretty poor for the past couple of years, while CW was getting more and more exciting with a couple of fights that were really competative. There's a reason why old B-Hop can still hang with the top dogs at the weight, while almost everybody knows the complete SMW top 4 would take over if they would move up. Now with a guy like Kovalev coming up that might all change, but I still think it's one of the weaker divisions out there.
LHW is obviously the more prestigious division as it was one of the 'original' 8, however in recent years the Cruiserweight division has beaten it hands down in terms of quality fights at world level.
Lightheavy always has and always will have more prestige but to me cruiser has been the better division over the last few years. Its had a hgher level of fighters and better fights.
Historically light heavy is far more respectable. Right now both are ****, in terms of elite depth. You have the champs themselves (and not even all of them are elite in either division) and then some promising young up and comers but in between you have massive wastelands of mediocrity at both 175 and 200.
Yeh I would agree. I looked at a P4P top 30 the other day and there was no Light Heavys or Cruisers. Not many had a an argument of inclusion apart from Dawson and he lost his last fight. I would say both are the bottom of the boxing pyramid right now barring the very lowest weights.
