Richard Torrez moves to 1-0 after a 2nd round KO victory over Allen Melson. Antonio Mireles moves to 3-0 after a 2nd round KO victory over Brandon Hughes. Willis Meehan moves to 12-0 after a 1st round TKO victory over James Singh.
A few us us have taken a liking to Willis, I think out of a combination of respect for his dad, and because he appears to be a very good athlete. But he has all the characteristics of one of those guys who will be fighting the same fisherman and pub brawlers for the next ten years.
I was hoping someone like Kris Terzievski, who fought on the same card as him yesterday. A step up in competition but not too hard an opponent at the same time.
Usually I am excited for an Olympic medal winner going pro especially an American. However the Tokyo field was weak and Torrez lucked out to be in the opposite grouping of Jalolov who is the one special guy in the field. Jalolov is both the world amateur champion and the Olympic gold medal champion at super heavyweight. He's a huge fighter with lot of power an he can move well. Anyway Torrez is a smallish heavyweight who limited in reach and has a go get em style that will get him hit too much when he steps up. I have a hard time believing he was the#1 glove in USA boxing, but he was. Top 50 potential as pro, top 10 is out of the question.
I have to agree at this stage. I think he'll end up at Bridgerweight if that division ever gains traction. I don't think Torrez will make massive waves in the HW division but time will tell and yes, you're right about the Olympics.
The Heavyweight Champion of Spain! Pretty decent for a 2nd fight, he was tougher than Fischer and co thought he was gonna be and after that fight I thought he earned his way onto another card. He's a tough but limited and beatable opponent who Clarke can get some rounds in with.
Yeah decent enough test for someone in his 2nd fight. Enguema will no doubt be used for more up and coming prospects.
