Mateusz Masternak vs Jason Whateley is official. October 29 in Zakopane, Poland. IBF eliminator for the Cruiserweight title.
Mike Balogun vs Marcus Oliveira on October 6. Balogen should be fighting more meaningful opponents and make some money before he retires. https://boxrec.com/en/event/861630/2887458 Also, Parker vs Joyce will now be for the interim WBO title. This content is protected
Yes, but I don't think there's much promoter money tied in with Balogun. And while his record looks good enough - he doesn't ace the eye test. In fact, he looks like a bit of a can - even if looks are deceiving. Not sure what he could hope for. Maybe a fight with James Kenzie Morrison?
A little surprising in that Whateley hasn't got a lot of results on his record apart from a couple of stops of a very over-the-hill Victor Oganov. Then again, the Cruiserweight division is looking pretty depleted these days.
Tetteh with a very pumped-up 20-1-0 record. That "L", of course, being a quick and brutal loss to Daniel DuBois. Tetteh has only fought once since that defeat. Advantage to Miller here - with the greatest interest probably being the weigh-in.
Without a lot of fanfare, Eric Molina (29-8) returned to the ring on July 30th with a 3rd round stoppage victory in Costa Rica. His opponent - Jose Castro (5-3) - is a sure bet to never to be mentioned in this thread again. So it would seem that Eric Molina is not yet past trying to profit from his past accomplishments.
I manage him. He really struggles to get fights in this part of the world because he can crack. The IBF contacted us as they were going down the line of available contenders to face Masternak and Jason jumped at the chance. He's not going to die wondering. There should be more of it in boxing.
Yeah, it does jump out that all of Whateley's fights have been in Australia. There are some good CWs in the Anzac (e.g. Opetaia, obviously) but it's not the deepest pool and it makes complete sense that a fighter with a reputation of stopping his opponents would have trouble getting fights with more notable ones. And, yes, sometimes these fights steal the show (e.g. Badou Jack v. Richard Rivera and I was one of the few boxing fans who actually knew who Rivera was). Good luck to you and your fighter in October!
Experienced amateur (Olympian in 2016 and Comm Games Silver medallist too), so travelling won't be an issue for him. Domestically our Cruiser scene here is actually quite decent, but yeah there's not a ton of money to get your head kicked in. Appreciate the well wishes! Fingers crossed for him and to be honest, even a loss isn't the end of the world.
