Helenius (now 32-4) prevailed by way of TKO 3. I suppose it would have been almost silly of him to retire given how many high-profile fights (e.g. Joshua v. Whyte) are cratering at the last minute. Obviously, his chances of landing a lucrative last-minute opponent role are pretty good.
USA prospect Sean Bey (8-0, 7 KOs) remained undefeated with a MD win over Quintin Sumpter (6-2, 4 KOs) last Friday night. The result was booed by the crowd. Sumpter managed to drop Bey with a combination in Rd 4 and Bey had a point deducted in the 5th for shoving Sumpter. A friend of mine scored the bout 77-73 in favor of Sumpter. Bey had last fought Terrell Jamal Woods last November and won a clear 4 round decision (though awarding him a sweep on all 3 cards seems overly-generous) - though that was later changed to a "NC" for some unknown reason. But Bey had real problems against Sumpter (who is kind of a tricky guy and gave Jeremiah Milton some big problems until Milton caught him with a wild shot) which suggests he probably isn't going much further.
Jeremiah Milton (10-0, 7 KO) v. Craig Lewis (15-6-1) has been added as an 8 round fight to the Anderson v. Rudenko undercard. Milton has looked pretty lousy his last several fights. He got a 4th round "stop" victory over a nobody a couple weeks back on the Kambosos v. Hughes undercard and it looked to me like the stop was more the result of a bout having run over its allotted time vs. any actual punishment Milton gave to his opponent. This fight has all the makings of a real stinker given that Lewis has considerable experience and knows how to use journeyman tactics. As evidence of the latter he was in poor shape for his fight with Roney Hines last year and every time he began to gas - he simply spit out his mouth guard to give himself a breather! Milton was absolutely flummoxed by a washed-up Fabio Maldonado when the two fought in April, so don't expect much excitement when he fights Lewis.
And just that quickly, Helenius has landed a lucrative last-minute opponent role. He has been confirmed as AJ's August 12th opponent. As I've posted in other threads - I can just about guarantee a 1st round stoppage of Helenius by AJ. We all know that a Wilder v. AJ fight is in the works and the best way of building hype for that future contest would be if AJ equals Wilder's feat of stopping Helenius in the 1st round. Cynic that I am, I'm think Helenius is showing up to lie down.
Imagine being Helenius You just wake up from a 10 month coma Wilder knocked you into "Wait what? What month is it?" "Don't worry Robert we got you a fight with some bartender in Finland in front of a castle to get you back on your feet" "Oh, OK I'm confused but that sounds OK" "And next week you fight Anthony Joshua" "WHAAAT?"
put up a good record, but prove you are absolutely no threat and the fights roll in. Chisora, Whyte, and now Helenius prove this.
Obviously there's no way that Hearn would green-light Heleinus if he wasn't going to roll over in the 1st round just like he did for Wilder.
Helenius has been hired by Hearn to lie down like a lamb. This is a disgusting last minute replacement, and Hearn should be ashamed of himself for trying to sell this garbage.
Exactly. Pretty much a given that AJ finishes Helenius in the 1st round to match Wilder's accomplishment (if you can call it that).
Derrick Chisora (33-13-0) will face Gerald Washington (20-5-1) in a 10 round fight on the undercard of Joshua v. Helenius. Should be an easy TKO 3 or 4 win for Chisora. Even in his "prime" Washington was never any good in a brawl or in a phonebooth fight. Chisora uses the ring quite well and sooner or later he'll either demolish Washington in the phonebooth or coming off the ropes (where Chisora is still very dangerous). I don't think Washington will even have time to get himself properly gassed before Chisora stops him.
