It does make one wonder at times. I don’t usually think of this scenario but given how many fighters are on the stuff these days, it would account for lack of activity in some cases I suppose.
Not to be deterred by his first pro loss, 47 year old heavyweight oddity Alessio Bisutti, the Italian fighting out of Thailand, returned to score a KO1 over 14-8-1 Somphot Seesa, who has fought at welterweight as recent as 2022. Edit: just watched this on YouTube, Seesa looks like a fat welterweight. Uppercut from the much bigger Bisutti ended the fight. Bisutti keeps winning or competing for regional org belts, he should really try to get into the mix with the WBA and their regular heavy title. Not saying he's any good or could win it, but he could get a shot just by playing the game the WBA has set up for that title.
Unbelievable. Sanchez has one win since his loss to kabayel and by beating a 18-24-0 opponent. More losses than wins! Since hrgovic basically just lost to dubois and is likely to be mandatory after that fight it shows that the talent pool in heavyweight is way too shallow for the number of belts that are flying around and being taken seriously... Right now we have usyk, parker, dubois and kabayel (and maybe fury but he will probably only come back for money fights) and then a serious drop off.
Wouldn't surprise me one damn bit. The WBA Regular title at Heavyweight is basically the old man belt. I think that's the real reason the Pulev-Wardley fight was changed to Pulev-Hunter and Wardley-Miller, they realized Wardley was too young to compete for it. Now it's true Michael Hunter isn't old, but with all his inactivity I reckon they see him as an honorary old man. On top of that, the WBA are back to passing those belts out like candy. There's a rumor Paul-Chavez could be for some version of the strap at Cruiser/Bridger. Hell, I'm pretty sure I got a strap with my last Walmart order. I'll get back to you on that one.
Things could always be worse brother. I was seeing a ton of rumors that the main event would be for some version of the WBA title and was convinced any day now I'd wake up to news they were making this for the WBA Interim title, or worse, reviving the WBA Regular title at this weight. ...Then again, you never can rule it out, especially not with the WBA. I mean they all have their odd moments but that one seems to go above and beyond with the stuff they sanction sometimes
Kovalev went out in style, scoring two knockdowns on the way to a round 7 TKO. An unfortunate amount of greats don't get to go out on wins. Hope this retirement sticks so he can count himself as one of the ones who went out with a W. Hope he has a good and healthy retirement
Whole bunch of heavies fighting in Riyadh on the 20th, most notably Tsotne Ragava and Lazinbek Mullojonov.
The commentators are absolutely correct. Mullajonov is talented and i am a fan. But his style of completely backing up rather than counter punching isn't going to work vs elite boxers. Elite boxers aren't going to stand there and allow you to attack, instead they are going to rush you, make it difficult for you to do anything. He is a real talent but this overly cautious style isn't going to work. Imagine him fighting a 6'7 heavy and then backing away everytime the other guy attacks. He wouldn't be able to close the distance. He needs to fight taller guys and needs to learn to attack. Watch footage of Usyk take on Joyce, Joshua, Fury etc. Mullakonov is a similar height to Usyk and is also a southpaw. That should be a good role model.
