FEWER male boxers will be allowed compete at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 but there will be more places available for female fighters. The International Olympic Committee has announced that they want gender parity at the 2020 Games. In response AIBA – the world governing body f0r Olympic boxing - has confirmed earlier plans to make changes to the boxing programme in 2020. There will be eight weight divisions for men instead of the usual ten while there will be five instead of three weight categories for women At the London and Rio Games the three women’s categories were at flyweight, lightweight – Katie Taylor won gold in this class in 2012 – and middleweight. According to an AIBA statement there will be no reduction in the total number of boxers competing in Tokyo compared to Rio. The AIBA will now begin the process of deciding the two men’s weight divisions to be dropped and the two categories to be added to the women’s programme. They are due to announce their decision in July. Meanwhile, Belfast native Ryan Burnett bids to emulate the achievement of Carl Frampton and capture a World professional title on home soil when he challenges defending IBF bantamweight champion Lee Haskins from Bristol in Belfast’s Odyssey Arena on Saturday night. The contest will be shown live on Sky Sport. The broadcast begins at 7pm with the title fight likely to start at 10pm approximately. http://www.independent.ie/sport/oth...re-female-divisions-to-be-added-35809269.html
