The heavyweight division was more exciting when we had the talented big men fighting each other, when they were small enough to still be quicker and more exciting but still strong enough to have the big knockout power. So now that a top 10 hw is generally about 6'4" and 230lbs + they are not going to be as exciting as watching norton or foreman or ali, but the cruiserweight is not looking too bad.
    cunningham
    Huck
    Wlodarczck
    lebedev
    Frenkel
    Lateef Kayode
are all talented entertaining fighters even the older guys like tarver and green still have something and are entertaining to watch.
There is as much talent in this division as nearly any other. But not many are really interested.

I think the interest in this division and the perception of the level of talent is harmed by the fact that people often rate the division by the top boxers ability to beat those in the other weights, but i think it is much harder for a cruiser to be rated highly p4p because the cruiser are so different in weight to surrounding divisions, 200lbs down to 175 is a big drop, and the HWs are so much bigger its hard for the likes of haye and adamek to step up

The cruiserweight division will always be underlooked and underappreciated, always. Doesnt matter if a Joe Louis spawns and dominates cruiserweights the way he dominated the HW division.
If Holyfield stayed at cruiser his entire career, regardless of any accomplishments, he wouldnt be as highly rated as he is now

It's mostly because of how the CW division came into existence and the way it's looked at today.

The Cruiser (or Junior Heavyweight) division was designed to bridge the ever increasing gap between LHW and HW.

If you are too big for the LHW division and too small to hang in there with the big boys there was the CW division for ya. But the big money is still in the HW division, so the smaller guys still try on the big pants first, and if they can't they drop down to the what came to be the "close but no sigar" division.
And it also works the other way 'round. If you started out at the Cruisers, and were succesful at one point in time you also want a decent payday and move up. Talent moves away, so you get poor champs.

Some succeeded, most didn't. So most upcoming Cruisers are looked at as 2nd rate Heavyweights and the division looked at as poor and dumpingground for smaller failed heavies or old middleweights with a lot of surplus fat.

    The problem is money!
If payment in boxing was linear (the bigger, the more money), it would have been a very popular division (weight of the average European male) and others wouldn't have killed themselves to make lower weights.

I'd rather watch a CW fight than a HW fight, big guys who don't tire out after a round.

Too bad they couldnt rename CW HW and make these oversized guys SHW. If the Cruiserweight division got as much attention as the heavy's the sport would be in much better shape.

yep, i think you're right. but it shouldn't be really though, super middleweights aren't just failed lhws, they have respect as their own weight.
A cruiserweight isn't really respected unless they step up to heavyweight and win a title, but it is the biggest step up in weight between any division. Only holyfield and haye have won cruiserweight world titles and heavyweight.
I've seen plenty of comments on this thread like "we now about the dearth of talent at cruiserweight" like its a generally accepted opinion that cruiser is crap. But if you look at the division there are actually a good number of talented exciting boxers there.
You also never see cruiserweights in p4p lists. Adamek was the best at lhw steps up to cruiser and beats the best, does this not make him worthy of good p4p status?

It only seems exciting because all of it's best fighters have moved up to heavyweight leaving a pile of equally matched men to duke it out. I suppose for this reason the Klitschko hating fanatics will love the heavyweight division again in a few years with both brothers retired.

It isn't bad but...not too great either. I big fan of USS but I think he's coming to the end of the road, been way to inactive of late (still the best in the division though I think). Huck...fun to watch in a sense, but he really is limited and I thought he lost to Lebedev. Frenkel looks like a deadly puncher and him vs Lebedev should be a decent match. Wlodarczck, not sure what the case is with him at the moment, may never enter a ring again after his OD although there was talk of a Green fight. Kayode could turn out to be interesting, as could a resurgent Afolabi.

With the way the HW division is today, then yea it is under-appreciated. Much better fights to be made at CW then HW. And the ones you want to see at HW won't happen because these guys won't fight eachother, only pad their records until cashing out on a payday with the Klitschkos. The lastest Wlad Mormeck fight is a complete joke.

I really don't think it is, if you look at the number of talented boxers at he top of the division I dont think there are many weights from light middle weight up to heavyweight with a deeper talent pool, plus the man at the top has faced 3 of the top 4 cruiserweights of recent times, as well as other top contenders and former world champions. A lot of the top boxers in the division are facing each other

And there you have it... Mormeck was one of the real top dogs at Cruiser, loses to Haye in a hard fight, and a couple of years later (after 3 wins) he's the joke opponent of the HW champ. :yep
No one takes the division seriously.

not really. the opinion of most of this forum is that a lot of CW from the past would have beat the K. bros

Cruiserweight should be renamed the heavyweight division. Heavyweight should be renamed super heavyweight. That would help it become more prominent, no doubt
