Jack Dempsey Vs David Haye, Dempsey wears his gloves (no horseshoe ;-)) and Haye wears his.

    10 rounds, who takes it.

No doubt this will spark some furious debate :good

Dempsey was not a massive Heavy by today's standards. Which version of Cruiserweight Haye would be best equipped? Would the Bonin Haye/later Heavyweight Haye be at a bigger advantage due to not being weight drained? Bar two lummoxes Dempsey didn't fight many big Heavies (Carpentier, Gibbons, Tunney), Haye is not gigantic himself.

I was going to go with Gene Tunney, but this one seems more fun and Dempsey, as far as I can see, is more well known with most boxing fans.

10 rounds is fine, it ain't going the distance and Dempsey was a decent ten-round fighter and I'm sure Haye would be happy to have two less rounds.

Is it a case of 'who lands first'? Does Dempseys chin transcend modern conditioning methods? Is Hayes low slung left hand finally his downfall here?

Is Dempsey so old fashioned he'd bottle it?

Let's get some debate going chaps :good

    why 10 rounds?

if you put them both in there primes together Haye would blitz him due to modern living conditions nothing else.

if there both born on the same day same world etc Dempsey would.

I go with Dempsey. They don't make them like that anymore.

What makes you think Haye would be the same fighter he is today if he was born in Dempsey's time?

So many ifs and buts and maybes!
According to Wikipedia (citing the NY TImes of 5th July, 1919), Dempsey said he wouldn't fight black boxers so this fight would never happen. If it did, I'm sure the superior modern conditioning of Haye would tell.

Dempsey also went many months between defences, something modern boxers are criticised for.

What rules modern era with the standing 8 count and opposite corner in place or old school rules.

If it's modern rules, Haye, Old School Dempsey.

From what I have seen of Dempsey and I will admit that it was fairly minimal, he was from a very different era of Boxing and dare I say it a simpler era.

I would have to go with Haye, Boxers in Johnson's day and age had only just started to move their heads and didn't throw much in terms of combinations, I think Haye would have landed heavily and regularly on Dempsey.

Fighter must return to neutral corner.

To those citing modern conditioning as a major factor here; how does this help Haye? Does it make Dempseys punches less powerful? Or would the 4oz nature of his gloves even things up?

Rob, Dempsey fought Tunney over ten, my whole point was no one is feasibly going to pick a decision and Haye is not known as someone who loves going 12 rounds, especially at Cruiser where his stamina was more of an issue :good

Now, where is the cut-off point in terms of modern conditioning? Dempsey, who famously took fights whilst probably malnutritioned, is probably a bad choice. But would Haye 'blitz' say, Ezzard Charles, Joe Louis or Rocky Marciano based on 'modern conditioning?' Why won't they land on him/be unable to implement their usual gameplan?

The latter three choices went 15 gruelling rounds many times without 'modern conditioning', although under far better standards than Dempsey I'm willing to admit :good

Haye has dreadfull stamina, modern conditioning lol...

I would go with Dempsey, Haye doesn't like to fight physically and Dempsey was an animal that would push the pace and drag David in to deep water.

I just realised you were talking about Dempsey. I thought you were talking about Johnson, no idea why, I just read Jack and automatically presumed you were talking about Johnson :patsch

I would go with Dempsey, he would hurt Haye and provided he doesn't get confused by having to stand in another corner he would be fine.

With smaller gloves it was imperative to throw accurate shots. Again, Dempsey was able to throw the kitchen sink at opponents, but I can assure you, fighters were aware pf what was needed to move along. Protecting the body was a major factor (getting winded far easier with smaller gloves) and I can see why this could be a problem for Dempsey against a head hunter like Haye.

But would Haye be likely to attempt to 'do a Bonin' on Dempsey? Or would his caginess see Dempsey having more opportunities to land?

More importantly, are we saying that If Demosey does land, his punching form/conditioning will see that the shot has very little effect/power? I don't see this being the case myself. Getting flouted innthe head is getting flouted in the head, especially for a fighter who doesn't have the greatest whiskers.

Is it intriguing at all or a whitewash whichever way you look at it?

It was Dempsey who pushed for the rule to be implemented. Against Tunney he had either forgotten that it had been/was too much of an animal and still hovered over him, hence the infamous 'Long Count'. :good

I was watching a documentary on it, funny stuff, I bet he regretted pushing for the new rule.

Yeah I was being a spaz I thought you were talking about Johnson

I think Dempsey would win, Haye's would use a lot of lateral movement and whilst that would probably keep him out of harms way for a few rounds, I think he would tire and get caught mid to late on.

Dempsey had very fast hands, and I'm not certain human skulls have come on so much in 100 years that he'd sparked by the first punch Haye lands. Footage shows us that Gene Tunney could be very elusive. I don't think it's certain that Dempsey cannot fire back at Haye.

Do I think he wins? I don't think he gets 'blitzed' that's for sure ;-)
