If you think we had monsters in the heavyweight division all along, think again...Rocky Marciano, young Cassius Clay, Ezzard Charles, Jack Dempsey, Bob Fitzsimmons..all would be considered Light Heavyweights and Cruiserweights today...all these monsters today are too big...so we either get rare slugfests or hugfests....imagine that, Rocky was only 5'10 about 185 lbs, picture him against Nicolay Valuev 7'3 or Vitali klitschko 6'9....you'd think you need another division..not all lil heavyweights can pull a "dempsey/willard"... a couple years ago i tapped into the much quieter "cruiserweight" division, with bell/mormeck/davis/jones etc etc...especially the dingalingman... and found out that a cruiser weight are big enough to give me a thunderous war and small enough to box with a lil speed...the cruiserweight division and light heavyweight is were its at...its realistic that a middleweight can go up and beat a light heavy...like the old dayz..where the best in the world faced eachother reguardless of size....so my attention is at 170 lbs-200lbs... what u think???

I would further classify boxers into Tall, Medium & Short categories at each weight class so that we get a true level playing field....

"Introducing the undisputed IBF & WBA short height Super Featherweight champion of the world..."

Cruiserweight is a superior division to heavyweight in everything other than money and media attention .

.......and the only reason they are superior in money is because the weekend boxing fan doesnt know any better. They think--heavyweight and think fireworks which half the time isnt correct--its more like hug works.

    Quote of the ****ing century............

Heavyweights is not just a word, it spelled out many men through decades of folklore..

Dempsey, Willard, Tunney, Johnson, Ali, Frazier...

Plus million dollar gates that go along with the old criteria, that the heavyweight champion of the world is the single most strongest man in the world..

I hate heavyweight division now, Its so slow and boring.
The fight between Maskaev and Rahman was so painfully slow and tedious.

Only Wladimir is worth watching nowadays but we have no one to match his athleticism and speed so we never get to see a truly great match up with him and someone else.

The fact that it hasn't always been an unfashionable division is why everyone who doesn't gets the chance to see most of the terrible fights on tv etc... remembers the old Tyson Holyfield clasics when most of the heavyweight fights were readily available on tv world wide..

Its got a lot to do with exposure..

If the cruiser fights were shown readily and internationally, it would become more obviously apparrent.. Tv and Media coverage or lack of it hurts the game a lot more than many people realise..

Household names don't exist as much any more..

Only super champs gets nearly as much as they should..

Eg.. In the uk not a lot of casual fans have even seen Floyd Mayweather..

To me that is sad.. Sports stations are garbage now, They love Soccer and NFL too much or even motor sports..

Very poor time for Televised sports and it shouldn't be..

This might sound silly, but I think a name-change would help. I think they should call the Cruiserweight division the HEAVYWEIGHT division and call these giants the SUPER-heavyweights, like they do in amateur boxing.:yep

Makes sense to be honest.Cruisers like to move up as thye want the heavyweight money but are too small to be competitive so end up dropping back to 200lbs.I prefer cruiser as you have athletic big men there who make weight.Heavies these days are slow ponderous and tend to think big is best.

The biggest problem with the heavy division is over-protective matchmaking and the resulting lack of consolidation of the titles. I think the talent is there, but the powers that be want to play it safe as possible for as long as possible in order juice every penny out of their investment.

totally agree it give them a reason to train.

look at toney he was just eating and though great no more diets for me when he was actually destroying his body and prowess in the ring.

but most heavies were close to the cruiserwieght limit
