    Which is better and why?
Ive heard conflicting stuff about sit ups being bad for the back. Also, Ive read that crunches are ineffectual.

The only back pain ive experienced with trying to train my abs, is with leg raises. So I avoid them.

My aim is to be as strong as possible.

    Any advice appreciated

It's funny how much boxers will work their abs but neglect their lower back.

    Very true.
Would you mind throwing a few drills my way which do not require much equipment?

I've seen people go through full 'ab workouts' and barely stimulate abs.
