"Marvelous" Marvin Hagler vs Marcos Geraldo (May 17, 1980) (10 Rounds Middleweights)

    Round 1: 10-9 Hagler
    Round 2: 10-9 Hagler
Round 3: 10-9 Hagler (Marcos does nothing but move away from Hagler's pwer & taunt, Hagler lands a few eye catching shots, & a low blow for Marcos taunting the ref doesn't see)
Round 4: 10-9 Geraldo (Marcos finally opens up & lands, Marcos does a good job rolling with/turning his head with punches to take away the sting or miss totally)
Round 5: 10-9 Geraldo (Round 5 really heats up)
Round 6: 10-9 Hagler (Marcos tries a couple flurries looking flashy but lands nothing, the solid blows landed by Marvin, Marcos doing a lot or running now)
Round 7: 10-9 Geraldo (Marcos best round of the fight, for the first time he looks like he could actually beat Hagler, landing all the shits, making Marvin miss all his)
Round 8: 10-9 Hagler (Big, Hagler goes all out with reckless abandon he does block when he needs to, but he snaps Marcos head like a pez dispenser all round)
Round 9: 10-9 Hagler (All business, Marcos tired still trying to look cute, Hagler going balls out showing what it takes to win a hard fight like this)
Round 10: 10-9 Hagler (Marcos tries to come out bombing but gets nailed by Hagler, maybe stiunned for the 1st time, Marcos tries but all Hagler)

    My Score: 97-93 Hagler

Official Scores: (97-93 Hagler) (97-94 Hagler) (97-95 Hagler)
Winner: By Unanimous Decision, "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler.

A interesting note about Hagler's opponent for this fight, in Geraldo's 15 loses he had before facing Hagler (he was 50-15 at the time) he had been knocked out 10 times out of those 15 loses. But neither Sugar Ray or The Marvelous One could get him out of there. Another interesting note, in Geraldo's very next fight he was KO'ed by Caveman Lee in 1, and 4 fights later by Tommy Hearns in 1. Of Geraldo's 28 loses (when his career was over) he had been KO'ed 21 of the 28 times, but not by Hagler or Leonard who he actually gave both good fights winning rounds off both, and fighting both Hagler & Leonard (Ray first) almost a exact year to the day of each other. Fighting Ray 05/20/1979 & Marvin 05/17/1980, I just found all these little things fascinating. Right off with his looks and stance Geraldo immediately reminds me of Arguello. Fight starts out Hagler throwing a hard jab, winning the first easy. Second rolls around and Hagler nails Geraldo with some hard shots that get Marcos blood up showing the macho he goes at Hagler flurrying but not really landing anything. Which in turn gets Hagler's blood up who proceeds to absolutely nail Marcos with clean hard punches to the head, and a couple really hard body shots that may have been borderline low. Fight cools down in the 3rd with Marcos doing nothing but moving away from Hagler's power and taunting. Hagler lands a few eye catching shots, and a flagrant low blow the ref doesn't see I assume for Geraldo's taunting. Marcos finally opens up in the 4th and lands, Hagler keeps busy but Geraldo does a fantastic job rolling with punches, or turning his head with them to take away the power or make them miss altogether. The announcers have this even after 4, I don't see that, Marcos has rolled with Hagler's punches well but he hasn't done enough offense in any round until the 4th to win one. Geraldo flurries to start the 5th, but nothing really landed. Big hook landed by Hagler, but Geraldo did roll with it still it landed. Marcos moves away plants and flurries again, this time landing a couple nice uppercuts before moving again, another close round but that's 2 in a row for Marcos. Round 6 Hagler switches back and fourth from Southpaw to orthodox & back again, Marcos flurries again but again none of it lands, just looks flashy. After 6 the announcers have it even still, I have it 4-2 Hagler. Geraldo has a good 7th nailing Hagler with 2 real good right hands in the first minute, making Marvin miss and landing all the good shots in the round. Hagler goes all out to start the 8th. all out attack, with Marcos tiring Hagler besides blocking when he needs to is attack attack attack, snapping Marcos head around like a Pez dispenser all round. The 9th is more of the same, all business from Hagler, a tired Geraldo still trying to be cute. Marcos tries to come out bombing in the final round but gets nailed immediately by Marvin, maybe hurt for the first time the whole fight. Marcos tries, but he still looks more worried about trying to show how macho he is then actually doing what it takes to win this fight. Meanwhile Marvin is selling out, going balls out looking for a stoppage. Marcos defiant still trying his taunts and Hagler now able to land just nails him in response. Marcos is trading, he's a tough customer tonight, Hagler snaps his head back with a right, and follows up with a solid landing hook that had to hurt. Hagler tired now himself, going balls to the wall since the 8th round, bounces off the ropes shells up for a brief instant for a breather. Comes out in a exchange landing a good hook and a solid left. The go at it with Hagler doing the better work for the remainder of the round, with Hagler getting Geraldo trapped in a corner working on him at the bell. Great fight, Geraldo certainly had his moments, and made Hagler work for every bit of this win, but there can be no question who won.

Young with a bad cut almost right between the eyes in the 3rd from a Cooney jab/hook? and by the end of the fourth Jimmy couldn't see a thing.

Jim Watt vs Howard Davis (June 7, 1980) (WBC Lightweight Title)

Round 1: 10-9 Watt (Measured round, Watt does the landing)

Round 2: 10-9 Watt (Same as the first, Davis is a little more active but Watt's does a great job of catching the shots that might land on the glove)

Round 3: 10-9 Watt (Watt's is using angles and ever so slight movement beautifully to just miss being tagged by one of Davis' shots. WHile also landing that good southpaw jab, and really nice combos)

Round 4: 10-9 Watt (More of the same, Watt lands a real good combination this round that gets Davis' attention)

Round 5: 10-9 Watt (Davis just isn't doing enough, and his not using his natural gifts and advantages in this fight at all. He does start to land this round, and does get in a good right hand, and good combo. Watt still gets the better work in while remaining very hard to hit)

Round 6: 10-9 Watt (A big round by Watt)

Round 7: 10-9 Watt (There is no way Davis could be thinking what he is doing is winning him this fight, he's not even making Watt really work hard to tire him out for the later rounds, not going to the body, barely throwing anything of note. Watt lands that left whenever he pleases. Davis does turn it up a notch in the final 20 seconds but it's not enough)

Round 8: 10-9 Davis (Davis' best round, the first time he actually looked like he was in a fight, and got the better of the exchanges)

Round 9: 10-9 Davis (That's 2 rounds in a row for Davis, he landed some real good hard shots to the head and body. Watt did land his best left of the fight, but this is Davis' round)

Round 10: 10-9 Davis (Davis is really coming on now, really throwing good shots, Watt still landing that left hand well, but I thought Davis did more good work this round, and a cut opened under Watt's eye)

Round 11: 10-9 Watt (Watt I thought came back good this round to take the play away from Davis)
Round 12: 10-9 Watt (Watt really comes on strong this round, very good round for Watt who opens up a cut over Davis' eye)

Round 13: 10-9 Watt (Davis just doesn't have it on this night. He does land a few good shots, but this round was handled by Watt)

Round 14: 10-9 Davis (Davis comes out fast this round, looking for a knockout. Davis lands good all round some of his best punches the whole fight. Watt does get him cornered in the last minute, and lands well, but not enough to take the round)

Round 15: 10-9 Watt (Back and forth round, really close. But I think Watt did just a bit better, almost called it 10-10)

    My Score: 146-139 Watt

Official Scores: (149-142 Watt) (147-144 Watt) (145-144 Watt)
Winner: By Unanimous Decision to retain the Lightweight Championship of the World, Jim Watt.

If Davis would've started earlier than the 8th round he might have had a shot in this fight, though this is the best I ever saw Watt look besides the Buchanan fight.

    Round 11: 10-9 Burnett
    Round 12: 10-9 Burnett

    My Score: 115-111 Burnett

Official Scores: (116-111 Burnett) (115-111 Burnett) (115-112 Burnett)
Winner: By Unanimous Decision, Jesse Burnett.

This was suppose to be a title shot for Galindez against Marvin Camel, but Camel had a eye injury in training and it became a eliminator with Jesse Burnett getting the spot. Burnett avenges a previous loss to Galindez from 4 years prior. This would be Victor's last fight, after retirement he decided to pursue a career as a race car driver. Four months from his retirement in the same year, his first race Galindez's car broke down near the end of the first lap. As he and his co-driver were walking back to the pits, a car went out of control, spun off the track and slammed into them. Galindez and his co-driver were killed instantly. Galindez was rated by Rign Magazine as one of the best LHW's of all time, he was inducted in the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2002.

    Official Scores: (N/A)
Winner: By 9th round Knockout, Trevor Berbick

Berbick took it to Tate from the opening bell, Tate showing no urgency or effort to look impressive, and his poor head movement & ring IQ cost him big time for a second straight fight. This was on the undercard of Leonard vs Duran I.

"Sugar" Ray Leonard vs Roberto Duran I (June 20, 1980) (15 Rounds for the WBC Welterweight Title)

Round 1: 10-9 Leonard (Good round for Leonard)
Round 2: 10-9 Duran (Great round for Duran, insanity. what a fight!)
Round 3: 10-9 Duran (Leonard fought back better this round, Duran punishing Ray's body)
Round 4: 10-9 Duran (Leonard starts well, Duran rocks him with a huge right & takes over, Ray comes on to late)
Round 5: 10-9 Leonard (Ray got the better of Duran at his own game this round)
Round 6: 10-9 Leonard (Good close round, Leonard more eye catching edges it)
Round 7: 10-9 Leonard (Razor close round, even till the last 30 seconds with Ray's accurate jab being the edge)
Round 8: 10-9 Duran (Big right hand at the end of the round wins it)
Round 9: 10-9 Duran (Looked like Ray took the round off)
Round 10: 10-9 Duran (Duran took command in this round, Ray closed better)
Round 11: 10-9 Leonard (Fantastic round with how tired both men are, Padilla is starting to **** me off)
Round 12: 10-9 Duran (Good round for Duran, Ray landed the best shot of the round)
Round 13: 10-9 Leonard (Holy **** what a round, Leonard was losing most of it, dug down so deep, what a fight)
Round 14: 10-9 Duran (could go either way, Ray fought tooth & nail, but Duran hurt Ray)
Round 15: 10-9 Leonard (Duran hardly fought)

    My Score: 143-142 Duran

Official Scores: (146-144 Duran) (148-147 Leonard) (145-144 Leonard)
Winner: By Unanimous Decision to win the Welterweight Championship of the World, Roberto Duran.

The pride and machismo of Leonard cost him this fight. I can't figure out what Angelo was telling Ray in the corner between rounds. You would think Dundee would be telling Ray "it ain't working kid!" "time to get on the move and pop that jab!" after the 4th round when they were down 3-1. No way Angelo believed they were winning the fight at that point, tough lesson to learn for the young phenom. Even though I scored it for Duran today, this fight was in no way a convincing or clear win for Roberto imo. The 14th was so close you can easily say Ray won it and then it's 143-142 Leonard, but great fight better than I remember either way and I watch it every couple years. Not a smart gameplan by Leonard, and it cost him. Of course we all know what happens in the rematch.

Salvador Sanchez vs Danny "Little Red" Lopez II (June 21, 1980) (15 Rounds for the WBC Featherweight Title)

Round 1: 10-9 Sanchez (Lopez had his moments even slightly cutting Sal, but too much done by Sanchez)
Round 2: 10-9 Lopez (Close round, Danny looked like he staggered Sal towards the end to edge it)
Round 3: 10-9 Lopez (close round, Sal looked like he spaced for a sec right in front of Danny & he made him pay)
Round 4: 10-9 Lopez (little concentration lapses by Sanchez are costing him these early rounds imo)
Round 5: 10-9 Sanchez (Now Sal's found his groove)
Round 6: 10-9 Sanchez (Sal hurts Danny & swarms all over him, later displays beautiful defensive movement)
Round 7: 10-9 Sanchez (Lopez living in Sanchez's world now)
Round 8: 10-9 Sanchez (Not really close anymore)
    Round 9: 10-9 Sanchez
    Round 10: 10-9 Sanchez
    Round 11: 10-9 Sanchez
    Round 12: 10-9 Sanchez
    Round 13: 10-9 Sanchez
    Round 14: TKO

    My Score: 127-120 (ATOS)

Official Scores: (127-120 Sanchez) (129-126 Sanchez) (125-122 Sanchez)
Winner: By 14th round Technical Knockout to retain the Featherweight Championship of the World, Salvador Sanchez.

Sanchez's unique sense of timing and accuracy were a sight to behold. As was his vision & reaction time so good it almost seemed like he would anticipate his opponents every move and punch. By the 3rd round he was landing every shot in the book on the former 8 time defending ex-champion at will. While closer on the official cards this time around, Little Red was never in this fight.

Ray Leonard vs Roberto Duran I 15 Rounds @ Welterweight Title, June 20, 1980.

Round 1 Leonard 10-9 Ineffective aggression from Duran, clean counters landed by Leonard.
Round 2 Duran 10-9 Huge round for Duran, he buckled Ray with a left hook and roughed him up.
Round 3 Duran 10-9 Duran took the first two minutes with body work, Leonard came back late.
Round 4 Duran 10-9 Duran jolts him with a right and works him over on ropes, Ray finishes well.
Round 5 Leonard 10-9 Ray landed a few hellacious hooks & smothered Duran on the inside and outworked him.
Round 6 Leonard 10-9 Ray lands lunging hooks, then countering well off the ropes throughout.
Round 7 Leonard 10-9 Ray with the cleaner counters, bullied Duran and outworked him, Duran had his moments.
Round 8 Duran 10-9 Decent round for Duran, back and forth, but the cleaner hard shots of Duran takes it.
Round 9 Duran 10-9 Duran outworked Ray from start to near finish they traded flush hard rights late.
Round 10 Leonard 10-9 Hard hook from Ray early, back and forth, Ray landed cleaner and defended well.
Round 11 Leonard 10-9 Both half dead, Leonard landed cleaner shots, while rolling with and smothering Duran's.
Round 12 Leonard 10-9 Both dead tired, Ray landed the cleaner shots, Duran getting really sloppy.
Round 13 Duran 10-9 Duran landed he heavier shots, both going at it, Ray finished well, but not enough.
Round 14 Leonard 10-9 Both men swinging for the fences, Ray landed the heavier haymakers, both hurt.
Round 15 Leonard 10-9 All Leonard, Duran took off last round, Ray landed telling shots, Duran mugged a lot.

    144-141 Leonard

Hell of a fight, I just happen to prefer the cleaner sharper work by Ray, Duran was working non stop, but much of it was being smothered and rolled with by Ray. Fought at a breakneck pace that would put many fighters of today to shame. Both men showing excellent beards, but a tad bit sloppy at times, and wide open for counters. And people naively think Mayweather and Pac would stand a chance against either.

In all my times watching this fight in the past, I have scored it for Leonard 144-141 to 143-142 this last time was one of the first times I've seen Duran as the winner. That's why I've never understood why everyone over the years so nonchalantly stated Duran won clearly. There was nothing clear about this fight, it was a neck and neck battle so razor close the announcers even said it had to be even going into the 15. When Duran took the round off they had no idea who won. Nothing definitive about this fight other than it being one of the greatest fights ever. Unlike their 2 rematches which were landslide wins for Sugar Ray.

 Couldn't agree more, I've seen in once before a while back, didn't score it, but remember thinking SRL won it, after seeing your scorecard that prompted me to watch it again, it could go either way, there were a few rounds that I thought were close to even but, still had Ray landed the cleaner shots. But no means is it some landslide for either guy, especially not Duran, who at best took it by a round, if being generous.
