Marvin Johnson vs Dave Lee Royster (September 9, 1980) (10 Rounds Light-Heavyweights)

    Round 1: 10-9 Royster
    Round 2: 10-9 Royster
    Round 3: 10-9 Johnson
    Round 4: KO

    My Score: 29-28 Royster (ATOS)

    Official Scores: (N/A)
Winner: By 4th round Knockout, Marvin Johnson.

Dave Lee Royster a very awkward journeymen of the time gives 2 time ex-champion Marvin Johnson problems and even cuts him by jumping all over Marvin and not giving him time or space to get his offense going. But Marvin on the comeback trail proves he still belongs at the contender rung.

    Round 14: 10-9 Sanchez

    My Score: 143-142 Sanchez

Official Scores: (148-139 Sanchez) (145-141 Sanchez) (145-145 Even)
Winner: By Majority Decision to retain the Featherweight Championship of the World, Salvador Sanchez.

Right away you could tell Ford's 4 inch height advantage and 5 inch reach advantage were going to give Sal all sorts of problems. And it was evident from the start to the viewer, as Ford popped Sanchez with his long jab a comfortable distance away from where Sanchez could get any work done. For the first 3 rounds besides some moderate success by Sal in the 3rd it was all Ford, and the crowd echoed that by being very quiet despite being heavily pro Sanchez. Sanchez thru 5 rounds was having real issues with his accuracy, normally a pinpoint accurate puncher I feel the height advantage of Ford was making it hard to land cleanly on Pat's chin, usually catching the shoulder before hitting the target and taking most of the sting off. Sal started coming on strong in the 8th and really started countering well and leading with the right which won him the fight. But this has been his toughest fight to date by far. How one judge had Sanchez only losing 2 rounds and winning by 9 points is beyond ridiculous, Sal won by the slimest of margins, but a score that terrible should not even be counted. I think Sal knew he was behind which was why he went after Pat so ferociously over the last 4 rounds, to bad a couple of the judges didn't see the same fight.

Lupe Pintor vs Johnny Owen (September 19,1980) (15 Rounds for the WBC Bantamweight Title)

Round 1: 10-9 Owen (hard round to score, went with Owen's volume over the harder shots of Pintor this round)
Round 2: 10-9 Owen (Owen's nonstop attack beats out the body punches & uppercuts of Pintor)
Round 3: 10-9 Owen (relentless pressure/attack from Owen pushes Pintor back all round, Pintor cut)
Round 4: 10-9 Pintor (Pintor cut over the other eye stuns Owen with the right, lands big while avoiding pressure)
Round 5: 10-9 Owen (Owen's bounces back well, pinning Pintor against the ropes and wailing away)
Round 6: 10-9 Owen (another round for Owen's pressure, backing up Pintor despite Lupe landing harder)
Round 7: 10-9 Pintor (Lupe finally decides to stick & move which clearly wins the round)
Round 8: 10-9 Pintor (the shorter in height & reach Lupe gets the better from range & now inside as well)
Round 9: 10-8 Pintor (Owen was having a better round again when Lupe caught him with a hellacious right)
Round 10: 10-9 Pintor (Lupe landing big now buckling Owen's knee's with every big shot landed)
Round 11: 10-9 Pintor (Owen still trying to win, Lupe picking his spots and unloading whenever he pleases)
    Round 12: KO

    My Score: 105-103 Pintor (ATOS)

Official Scores: (107-102 Pintor) (106-102 Pintor) (105-103 Pintor)
Winner: By 12th round Knockout to retain the Bantamweight Championship of the World, Lupe Pintor.

A all action Batamweight scrap that sees Johnny Owen never stop throwing a punch through the first 6 rounds. Despite Pintor landing the harder shots, punishing Owen's body and liver & the point of his chin with devastating uppercuts the Welch stickman never stopped and sliced & diced Pintor's eyebrows up with sharp punches and elbows. To start round 7 Pintor starts to actually use movement instead of trying to stand his ground and bang it out with Owen, and it brought him his first real clear round of the fight. From that point on it was downhill for Johnny Owen, showing tremendous heart & guts but totally outgunned he gets dropped for the first time ever in the 9th. Pintor finally ends it in the 12th, a amazing effort by Owen but too much heart as Johnny was knocked unconscious and had to be removed on a stretcher. At the hospital a blood clot was found in his brain and they had to operate. Tragically Johnny Owen died 2 months later.

Alan "Boom Boom" Minter vs "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler (September 27, 1980) (15 Rounds for the WBA & WBC Middleweight Titles)

Round 1: 10-9 Hagler (close round, better blows landed by Hagler)
    Round 2: 10-9 Hagler (smash)
    Round 3: TKO

    My Score: 20-18 Hagler (ATOS)

Official Scores: (20-19 Hagler) (20-19 Minter) (20-19 Hagler)

Minter letting the partisan crowd get his blood up was his undoing. Adrenaline flowing after a decent first round waives Marvin in wanting to get it on, Hagler obliged in punched several big holes in Boom Boom's face. The blood flowing profusely now and Hagler is absolutely relentless, not even giving Minter the chance to stagger or wipe blood from his eyes. Marvin sends Alan's mouthpiece flying and the writing is on the wall in the 3rd round as a crazed Hagler savagely beats Minter from ropes to corner. Minter's face a mask of blood, the ref calls a halt to the action and take the soon to be ex-champ to the corner to have both eyes now looked at. One wipe of the towel and Minter's corner stops the fight making Marvelous Marvin Hagler the new Middleweight Champion of the world. Melee followed by a riot ensues, and Hagler has to cut his long awaited celebration short and hightail it out of the ring and back to the lockers as angry onlookers throw debris into the ring apparetly at Hagler and his team.

Eusebio Pedroza vs Rocky Lockridge I (October 4, 1980) (15 Rounds for the WBA Featherweight Title)

Round 1: 10-9 Lockridge (real good opening round for Rocky)
Round 2: 10-9 Lockridge (another good round for Rocky)
Round 3: 10-9 Lockridge (Pedroza doing nothing to win these rounds)
Round 4: 10-9 Lockridge (better round from Pedroza, much closer, Rocky still landed the more eyecatching shots)
Round 5: 10-9 Lockridge (was Pedroza's round, Rocky had a great final minute to steal the round)
Round 6: 10-9 Lockridge (closer round, could go either way)
    Round 7: 10-9 Lockridge (close)
Round 8: 10-9 Pedroza (first round, Pedroza appeared to clearly win)
Round 9: 10-9 Pedroza (good stuff from Pedroza, making Rocky just miss while tagging him throughout)
Round 10: 10-9 Pedroza (in it to win it now, great stamina, but then he did next to nothing the 1st 7 rounds)
Round 11: 10-9 Lockridge (just edges it landing the bigger shots)
Round 12: 10-9 Pedroza (good body attack from the champion)
    Round 13: 10-9 Pedroza (close)
Round 14: 10-9 Pedroza (all Pedroza, he hit Rocky with so many low blows that round Andrew Ward would blush)
Round 15: 10-9 Lockridge (Pedroza did next to nothing)

    My Score: 144-141 Lockridge

Official Scores: (149-139 Pedroza) (144-142 Lockridge) (147-141 Pedroza)
Winner: By Split Decision to retain the WBA Featherweight Championship, Eusebio Pedroza.

No idea what two of these judges were watching. I'm not saying Pedroza winning is out of the realm of possibility, but he sure didn't win by 10 or 6 points. If he did it's by what the score the judge gave to Lockridge. Hell to my view Pedroza gave away the first 3 rounds, started fighting in 4 & 5 but was still out fought. If Lockridge doesn't win another round that's 145-140 right there. I could see a 8-7 win for Pedroza as the 4 & 5 were close and if given to the champ he wins. But that's terrible, Pedroza gave half the fight away to anyone watching, yet the Panamanian Judge and the ref score Pedroza a 10 & 6 point winner, disgusting. No wonder boxing lost favor on network TV with bias scoring like that, like I said a 1 point win for Pedroza is within reason, but Rocky Lockridge should have been declared the new Featherweight Champion.

Michael Spinks vs Yaqui Lopez (October 18,1980) (10 Rounds Light-Heavyweights)

Round 1: 10-9 Lopez (absolutely hammers Spinks' body)
Round 2: 10-9 Lopez (closer round, Yaqui still punishing the body with hard shot)
Round 3: 10-9 Lopez (all Spinks in the 1st minute, Yaqui dominated the final 2)
Round 4: 10-9 Spinks (Michael goes all out, Yaqui comes back strong, razor close round)
Round 5: 10-9 Spinks (starting to take control now)
Round 6: 10-9 Spinks (hurt Lopez to the body to start the round, teed off upstairs)
    Round 7: TKO

    My Score: 57-57 Even (ATOS)

    Official Scores: (58-56 x 2 Spinks) (57-57 Spinks)
Winner: By 7th round Technical Knockout, Michael Spinks.

It didn't last long but what a war between these 2! Lopez who has challenged for the LHW title 4 times (should have won at least 2 of them imo) is a huge step up in class for Spinks in just his 14th pro fight. Lopez takes it to the future ATG from the opening bell destroying Michael's body, Spinks digs down deep to pull out the win.

Round 1: 10-9 Spinks (good close first round)
Round 2: 10-9 Spinks (another close round, Rodriguez is game as they come)
Round 3: 10-9 Spinks (starting to take command)
Round 4: 10-9 Rodriguez (gave it his all outworking Spinks & took at least a share of this round)
Round 5: 10-9 Spinks (throwing the kitchen sink at Rodriguez wanting the KO)
Round 6: 10-9 Spinks (had Rodriguez out on his feet, but Luis saw the final bell standing)

    My Score: 59-55 Spinks

Official Scores: (60-52 Spinks) (60-54 Spinks) (60-55 Spinks)

Spinks 2nd pro fight. He weighed in under the Super Middleweight limit, war from bell to bell. Both men gave it everything, Rodriguez was exhausted and out on his feet in the final round still kept coming after Spinks.

Mike Weaver vs Gerrie Coetzee (October 25, 1980) (15 Rounds for the WBA Heavyweight Title)

Round 1: 10-9 Coetzee (good opening round for Gerrie)
Round 2: 10-9 Coetzee (not so much what Gerrie did, more what Weaver didn't which is normal for Weaver)
Round 3: 10-9 Coetzee (Gerrie's stamina already fading goes for broke trying to KO Weaver lands big)
Round 4: 10-9 Weaver (Mike finally really gets to work)
Round 5: 10-9 Weaver (competitive round, Weaver more active then I've ever seen him, killing Coetzee's body)
Round 6: 10-9 Weaver (close round, Gerrie had his moments)
Round 7: 10-9 Weaver (good body attack from Mike, Gerrie's punches are having no effect)
Round 8: 10-9 Coetzee (landed big, and went for broke again with probably the last bit of gas in the tank)
Round 9: 10-9 Weaver (good body work from Mike, Coetzee hugs Weaver & the ropes the whole round)
Round 10: 10-9 Weaver (Coetzee takes a nap using mike as a pillow for 3 minutes)
Round 11: 10-9 Weaver (Gerrie leans on Mike so hard he almost pushes him out of the ring more than once)
Round 12: 10-9 Weaver (Coetzee playing football again trying to tackle Mike over the top rope)
    Round 13: KO

    My Score: 116-112 Weaver (ATOS)

Official Scores: (117-113 Weaver) (116-114 Weaver) (116-115 Weaver)
Winner: By 13th round Knockout to retain the WBA Heavyweight Championship, Mike Weaver.

Not a bad fight, Mike Weaver being the fresher fighter throughout still surprises me watching today. Mike always had terrible stamina problems but he remained moderately active from the 4th round on. So much holding and holding the ropes from Coetzee he could have been rightfully DQ'ed, the ref was really terrible. Why the WBA would get a ref who speaks no English to work a fight with 2 fighters that don't speak a lick of Spanish is puzzling. Both Weaver & Coetzee speak English you would think it would be a no brainer to get a ref that could communicate with the fighters. This is maybe Weaver's best performance.

Winner: By 12th round Technical Knockout to retain the Lightweight Championship of the World, Jim Watt.

O'Grady rarely fought tough competition and when he did he usually was KO'ed or his father stopped the fight. That's why the write-up after the fight says "O'Grady's inexperience showed" even though this was The Bubblegum Kid's 75th fight. Given that I thought O'Grady stayed with the pure boxer pretty well, and had it close to even leading up to the stoppage despite his inexperience against top competition, he had Watt bleeding badly from the nose, and in bad cuts in both eyebrows including a bad vertical gash in one in the 9th that about had the fight stopped. A few gripes with how the fight was ruled. Firstly, when Watt was badly cut in the 9th, the officials allowed Watt's cornerman to put pressure on the cut the doc was inspecting to stop the bleeding. Clearing the area is fine so the doc can look, but you can't stop the bleeding in round, the doc is looking to see if the fight needs stopped, this was clearly against the rules. Secondly, Watt's best weapon the whole fight was his head and the french ref never did anything about it. Lastly, in the 10th round while O'Grady for some crazy reason puts his hands down looks at the ref and motions with his glove about something (probably Watt using the top of his head as a battering ram and opening a huge split on Sean's forehead) the ref doesn't really acknowledge him, and while his head is turned Watt lunges in and cracks O'Grady with a left that has Sean back in the corner. This fight should have been stopped immediately after that butt and went to the scorecards. Unreal they call a TKO win for Watt when the gash was the reason and it was from a clear (probably intentional) butt.

Apparently the ref somehow didn't see the butt (he must legit be blind) so it was ruled by a punch which explains the TKO, but come on, I've never seen a punch by anyone open up a huge gash high up on someone's forehead. That's clearly blunt force trauma with something very hard like the top of a man's head, absolutely unreal the French ref called a TKO on this. I wouldn't even be mad if Watt was DQ'ed for the infraction, the use of his head was his best weapon all night taking advantage of the orthodox versus Southpaw cliche that butts happen. This is true, but Watt most times looked like he was intentionally doing it as part of his gameplan. Even still, I don't mind so much about the butts not getting called, or points not taken, hell I had Watt winning on points, but this fight should not been called a TKO. That is just too much.

Round 8: 10-9 Cobb (all Tex Cobb, nothing close here)
    Round 9: 10-9 Cobb (big)
    Round 10: 10-9 Norton (big)

    My Score: 96-94 Norton

Official Scores: (97-94 Norton) (97-95 Cobb) (96-95 Norton)
Winner: By Split Decision, Ken Norton.

A shot to bits Ken Norton does enough to get by Cobb. Despite this being a way past it Norton versus a never will be there Cobb this is a pretty damn exciting and great fight. I could see anywhere from Norton just edging it, too a draw. Randy Cobb was 17-0 coming into this fight, and Ken had been retired over a year making movies. The fight was so awesome the crowd was throwing money in the ring for a full minute after the final bell.

    Reserving post 400! I ain't missing it this time :p :dancer2:

Carlos Zarate vs Lupe Pintor (June 3, 1979) (15 Rounds for the WBC Bantamweight Title)

Round 1: 10-9 Pintor (nothing in it, Lupe the aggressor, landed a nice hook)
Round 2: 10-9 Pintor (countered well with a hard jab & left hook to the head & body)
Round 3: 10-9 Pintor (beating Zarate to the punch, Carlos trying to open up)
Round 4: 10-8 Zarate (after cagily leading with his head, Carlos lands a straight right left hook combo for the KD)
Round 5: 10-9 Zarate (stunned Pintor a couple times with big shots)
Round 6: 10-9 Pintor (good comeback round for Lupe)
Round 7: 10-9 Zarate (close round, Carlos finished stronger to edge it)
Round 8: 10-9 Pintor (close round, Pintor won the chess match this round)
Round 9: 10-9 Pintor (Zarate just not active enough, when he does engage Lupe beats him to the punch)
Round 10: 10-9 Pintor (more of the same, Lupe staggers Zarate late in the round)
Round 11: 10-9 Zarate (Carlos boxes brilliantly, still a close round)
Round 12: 10-9 Zarate (was Lupe, Carlos comes on strong landing some monster shots to take the round)
Round 13: 10-9 Zarate (boxing and moving, Lupe giving chase)
Round 14: 10-9 Pintor (big round for Lupe, bangs the body staggers Carlos, the champ makes it close)
Round 15: 10-9 Pintor (all Pintor the 1st half of the round, Zarate made the second half close, Lupe looked to have wanted it more)

    My Score: 143-141 Pintor

Official Scores: (143-142 Pintor) (145-133 Zarate) (143-142 Pintor)
Winner: By Split Decision to win the Bantamweight Championship of the World, Lupe Pintor.

Great chess match, former stablemates Zarate & Pintor knew each other and their styles well. Not the normal all out Mexican Style war, still a great contest. Lupe Pintor boxed beautifully, Carlos Zarate just wasn't active enough. I could see a draw as well, but it would be tough justifying Zarate the winner of this fight.

Lupe Pintor vs Eijiro Murata (June 11, 1980) (15 Rounds for the WBC Bantamweight Title)

Round 1: 10-9 Murata (all Murata, very impressive round)
Round 2: 10-9 Murata (has been all Murata, a very impressive attack & counterattack by Eijiro, Lupe's in trouble)
Round 3: 10-9 Murata (what a fight! Lupe comes out countering beautifully to take a commanding lead, Murata stroms back, Pintor closes again, Murata finishes stronger, great fight!)
Round 4: 10-9 Pintor (all Pintor the 1st 1:30, Murata comes on strong again in the second half to possibly tie or steal the round, but Lupe did enough in the last 1:30 to take the round)
Round 5: 10-9 Pintor (Lupe really showing his great skills now offensive & especially defensively, rocking Murata's head going to the body hard, Eijiro finishes strong again)
Round 6: 10-9 Murata (too close to call, round could legitimately go to either man, great stuff from both)
Round 7: 10-9 Murata (another back & fourth round, Murata does just better to nick this round, and Pintor's crown is in serious jeopardy)
Round 8: 10-9 Pintor (big round from Pintor, Eijiro had a couple moments, but clear Lupe round)
Round 9: 10-9 Pintor (close round, Murata tries to catch Lupe off guard getting his mothpiece late, lands a few good rights, but Pintor lands the better punches)
Round 10: 10-9 Pintor (very close, Pintor's harder shots just edge it, another swing round)
Round 11: 10-9 Pintor (awesome round, Muarata goes up big, Pintor storms back, Murata lands big in the last 30 seconds)
Round 12: 10-9 Murata (late rally gives Eijiro the round)
Round 13: 10-9 Pintor (round was almost all Murata based on activity yet didn't land much of anything effective, Lupe lands 3 huge shots that hurt Murata to end the round)
Round 14: 10-9 Pintor (Lupe hurt the challenger early and dominated the round, Murata fought courageously and even stunned Lupe at the bell)
Round 15: 10-9 Murata (both men exhausted Murata sells out going for the stoppage)

    My Score: 143-142 Pintor

Official Scores: (147-142 Pintor) (146-144 Murata) (144-144 Even)
Winner: This bout is declared a draw, Lupe Pintor retains the Bantamweight Championship of the World.

Eijiro Murata is one hell of a fighter, definitely my type of fighter as he takes it too the Bantamweight Champion of the World from the first bell. After 3 rounds it's obvious this is not only going to be a great fight, but Pintor is gonna have a real problem bringing his title back home to Mexico City with him. By the 4th round Lupe realized he has a real serious fight on his hands and he went to work with every bit of seriousness and intensity he had when he wrested the crown from Carlos Zarate 12 months prior. However Murata came storming back with a vengeance in the second half of the round to possible tie or even still the frame. By round 6 this is easily one of my favorite fights of 1980, great round of boxing beautiful displays of offense and defense from both men, with each having their moments. After 3 more real good rounds, it's neck and neck. After 12 rounds it's still dead even, Murata is really taking it to Pintor. Lupe obviously not expecting such a fierce battle is doing well to to keep it close. Entering the final round I had Pintor slightly ahead and the challenger completely sells out going for the stoppage. Both men totally spent Murata take the round to end a great great fight. This one was a complete tossup, either man could have won by a anywhere from a couple points to a single point. The draw is probablly the fairest outcome, after this great great fight where neither man clearly beat the other. What a performance from Eijiro Murata, I would have loved to see this rematch.
