Matthew Saad Muhammad vs Vonzell Johnson (February 28, 1981) (15 Rounds for the WBC Light-Heavyweight Title)

Round 1: 10-9 Johnson (good start for Vonzell)
Round 2: 10-9 Johnson (closer round, Johnson still controls most of it with the jab)
Round 3: 10-9 Johnson (MSM going for the KO with every punch, Johnson making him miss & landing the jab)
    Round 4: 10-9 Johnson
Round 5: 10-9 Johnson (good round for Vonzell)
Round 6: 10-8 Saad Muhammad (bogus knockdown, though I thought MSM won the round anyway)
    Round 7: 10-9 Saad Muhammad
Round 8: 10-9 Saad Muhammad (good round for MSM)
    Round 9: 10-9 Johnson (close)
Round 10: 10-9 Saad Muhammad (close)
    Round 11: TKO

    My Score: 95-94 Jonson (ATOS)

Official Scores: (98-92 Saad Muhammad) (97-93 Saad Muhammad) (95-95 Even)
Winner: By 11th round Technical Knockout to retain the WBC Light-Heavyweight Championship, Matthew Saad Muhammad.

This was suppose to be a unification fight between Matthew Saad Muhammad & Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, but the fight somehow fell through during MSM's training camp. Johnson steps in as a replacement, and to say Saad Muhammad may have had a let down going from unifying the division to defending his title appears like quite the understatement. Vonzell right off the bat shows good movement and a active stiff left jab, with MSM just looking for the homerun from the outset and giving away the first 5 rounds easily. Like the Yaqui Lopez defense (this is MSM's 6th title defense in less than 2 years) Matthew Saad looks to be in danger of letting his title slip through his fingers. Then in the 6th round the challenger (Johnson) who had been very inactive with 5 fights in the last 3 years, starts to slow down just a bit. Up to this point he was moving like a young Ali, and MSM couldn't catch up, but he slows down and Muhammad is able to corner him and land clubbing blows. I thought MSM just edged the round anyway, but Johnson tripped over his own feet as Matthew closed in and the ref with a bad call calls it a knockdown. Bogus 2 point round aside, Johnson is visibly starting to tire and MSM starts to take over. MSM climbs back into the fight in the 6th, 7th, & 8th until Johnson makes a stand in round 9, which was a close round but Johnson stood his ground and got the better of the majority of the action. But that's all Johnson had, as he was very tired in round 10, and though he landed a hellacious uppercut I thought MSM won the round based on ring generalship & effective aggression alone. Though I had Johnson up at this point by the slightest of margins, the writing is on the wall. Johnson gave what he had left in the 11th, but Muhammad swarmed all over him landing his first real big punches of the fight and knocking Johnson down (legit this time) for a count. Johnson beats the count but he's spent, MSM continues to tee off but Johnson is doing well to not catch most of the shots flush, yet Tony Perez with his second terrible call of the fight jumps in and waives it off. Now Johnson was spent and it probably was just a matter of time. But it was a real close fight that Johnson should have been winning to this point, he only had to survive another 20 seconds to the bell, and was doing very well to avoid serious damage. I don't blame Johnson & Angelo Dundee being pissed at the ref after this fight. I'm a Matthew Saad Muhammad fan, he's one of my all time favorite fighters, but he was in real trouble of losing this fight at least he should have been (he somehow had a big lead on the official scorecards) and it seemed more like he was helped out with the win rather than doing it on his own like in all his other come from behind KO defenses.

Aaron Pryor vs DuJuan Johnson (November 14, 1981) (12 Rounds for the WBA Super-Lightweight Title)

Round 1: 10-8 Johnson (weary or Johnson's power Pryor gets on his bike but is dropped hard anyway)
    Round 2: 10-9 Johnson
Round 3: 10-9 Johnson (has Pryor hurt a few different times this round)

    My Score: 58-55 Johnson (ATOS)

Winner: By 7th round Technical Knockout to retain the WBA Super-Lightweight Championship, Aaron Pryor.

Johnson only 20 years old at the time, and already that bald. Pryor came out acting macho, made Johnson wait in a cold arena. Then came out with his track shoe's on and did about 10 laps around the ring in the opening round fearful of Mr. Excitement's power. And with good reason as Johnson lands a real good combo, then cuts Pryor off mid lap and drops him hard dazing him for almost the rest of the first round. Pryor comes out for the second round looking ridiculous, completely off balance flailing around he does catch Johnson with some good shots to start the round, but Johnson from the famous Kronk gym also has that power known by it's fighters and he staggers Pryor again having him doing silly dances trying to look slick while hurt. And for the remainder of the round Pryor actually boxes instead of his normal all swarming style, clearly respecting the power Johnson carries. Johnson has Pryor fighting smart & safe, still every time he connects he visibly hurts Pryor, and Aaron launches a huge left hook so off balance he does a 180 and ends up face first in the ropes throwing himself completely off his feet. Pryor gets up, fixes his hair, extends his glove to touch gloves with Johnson and when Johnson extends his in a show of sportsmanship Pryor launches a sneaky cheapshot right hand at Johnson. Huge right hand by Johnson and Pryor is on ***** street staggering around trying to tie up. To start the 4th Johnson levels Pryor with a straight right hand again that has him reeling on the ropes. Time goes by and another big right hand wobbles the legs of Pryor again, and Pryor is dancing around the ring trying to shake the cobwebs again. 2 more big right hands has Pryor frozen again, and the champ is not looking good at all, off balance, uncoordinated, poor technique I'm not impressed. Johnson is tired now, and Pryor is taking over now in the 5th. Johnson just never was active enough to put enough accurate punches together to put Pryor away and it cost him the title. Because he had Aaron Pryor reeling all over the ring for 4 rounds.

Cornelius Boza-Edwards vs Rafael "Bazooka" Limon (March 8, 1981) (15 Rounds for the WBC Super-Featherweight Title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Boza-Edwards
    Round 2: 10-9 Boza-Edwards
Round 3: 10-9 Limon (Limon is fouling pretty bad and not getting warned)
    Round 4: 10-9 Boza-Edwards
    Round 5: 10-8 Boza-Edwards
    Round 6: 10-9 Boza-Edwards
Round 7: 10-9 Limon (very close, Limon just edged it with the harder punches)
Round 8: 10-9 Limon (great heart shown by Bazooka Limon, he dug down deep & had a great round)
Round 9: 10-9 Limon (great round back & forth, 1st Limon's then Boza comes up then Limon takes it at the end)
Round 10: 10-9 Boza-Edwards (gets back on track & behind the jab to take the round)
    Round 11: 10-9 Boza-Edwards
    Round 12: 10-9 Boza-Edwards
Round 13: 10-8 Boza-Edwards (close round Limon did well but was deducted a point for a flagrant low blow)
Round 14: 10-9 Boza-Edwards (Limon started strong, B-E took over landing the cleaner harder blows)
Round 15: 10-9 Boza-Edwards (try as he might, Corny beat Limon at his own game to end the fight)

    My Score: 146-137 Boza-Edwards

    Official Scores: (146-139 Boza-Edwards) (146-140 Boza-Edwards) (143-141 Boza-Edwards)
Winner: By Unanimous Decision to win the WBC Super-Featherweight Championship, Cornelius Boza-Edwards.

Here's another great south paw versus south paw fight, Boza-Edwards was running away with this thru 6 rounds winning 5 with a knockdown. But Bazooka Limon came roaring back in the 7th, 8th, & 9th rounds to tighten it up. Limon has been fouling low quiet regularly as well as leading with his head and shoulders with referee Dick Young barely warning him for it. But fighting Cali, Limon from Mexico is basically the home fighter with a ton of support from the crowd over the Ugandan born London adopted Boza-Edwards. B-E gets back on track and easily takes 10-12, and is doing well again in the 13th when Limon hits Cornelius with a flagrant low blow that Young can't ignore. Limon does well after the flagrant low blow, but B-E does as well each man stunning the other a couple times in the round. Limon comes out swinging but not much landing, and he punches himself out, B-E comes back & hurts Limon and his landing straight clear punches. Limon goes on the attack again, and again most are ineffective cuffing or caught on the gloves & elbows. They tie up Ref Young goes to break the fighters & Limon attacks with 2 punches on the break he gets a talking to for. This is a all out war, both men come out for the 15th & final round looking for the stoppage, Corny rocks Limon snapping his head back and lands a barrage of blows. Limon tries to come back, Corny has this fight well in hand though he boxed well and deservedly won this tite.

@C.J. Your guy gives a very charming interview they show before this fight. Very good fight, Cobb despite no amateur experience. Dokes with a ton of of amateur experience did not fight the correct fight here, he could have made it so much easier on himself by just moving and jabbing. Cobb does not do well with movement, while not the biggest puncher he was landing solid and hurt Dokes numerous times while Dokes couldn't even make Cobb blink with that rock head of his.

This was all Marvin Johnson through the first 3 rounds with Spinks having his moments here and there. Then in the 4th round Spinks lands a thundering left hook out of nowhere that puts Johnson flat on his back with his eyes rolled back for almost the count. Marvin makes it to his feet at the count of 10, but he is clearly still in la la land and that's all she wrote.

"Joltin" Jeff Chandler vs Eijiro Murata I (April 5, 1981) (15 Rounds for the WBA Bantamweight Title)

Round 1: 10-9 Murata (should have had a knockdown scored for Murata)
    Round 2: 10-9 Murata
    Round 3: 10-9 Chandler
    Round 4: 10-9 Chandler

Round 7: 10-9 Chandler (good round for Joltin Jeff from start to finish)
    Round 8: 10-9 Murata
Round 9: 10-9 Chandler (Ref finally warns both men to stop clinching/grappling/wrestling & throw punches)
Round 10: 10-9 Chandler (close round, hard to score)
    Round 11: 10-9 Chandler
Round 12: 10-9 Murata (good round for Eijiro)
    Round 13: 10-9 Chandler
    Round 14: 10-9 Murata
Round 15: 10-9 Murata (big round for Murata hurt Chandler real bad again)

    My Score: 143-142 Murata

Official Scores: (145-142 Chandler) (147-146 Murata) (146-146 Draw)
Winner: This bout was declared a draw, Jeff Chandler retains the WBA Bantamweight Championship.

Intriguing match-up but for the first 8 1/2 rounds (except for a clear round here or there) this has been a hard fight to score. Both men have spent the majority of most rounds clinching, grappling, holding & wrestling rather than throwing punches. Finally in the 9th round the ref warns both fighters to knock it off and start throwing punches, and the action immediately heats up. When Chandler uses his reach and boxes behind his jab he wins the rounds rather easily, when he allows Murata to bulldoze inside and get off his work all Jeff does is grab hold & wrestle losing those rounds. Threw 9 rounds I have Murata with a slight (1 point) lead. Since the ref's warning Chandler had taken over, he's not dominating but he was won 3 of the next 4 rounds and there hasn't been near as much tying up, and moves in front with a 1 point lead with 2 rounds to go. Murata gets the better of the 14th and the 15th is a all out war, but Eijiro hurts Jeff bad early and has a big round to sweep the last two to just win the fight on my card. However this was no clear win for either fighter imo, some of these rounds because of all the hugging & holding etc., were incredibly hard to score so I can see a 1 point win either way, but the draw is probably the fairest result to this fight. Still if the ref would have called the knockdown of Joltin' Jeff in the first like he should have there would have been little doubt. Eijiro Murata would have deserved the win & title if not for the ref's mistake.
