I haven't seen the whole fight but it was supposed to be a barnburner and the HLs certainly support that This content is protected
It'll make my Top 50, based on the last 3 rounds alone, although there is a bit of overhyping with the... What An Incredible Fight!, tagline on the video. It's basically a by the numbers schooling for the first 4 or 5 rounds, including a knockdown of Spelman. But the comeback he mounts in the second half is where things finally get interesting. I just got done with Jorge Linares losing via UD to Zhora Hamazaryan, and I gotta say, it was a damned fun watch, fun enough to make the list. Even though I picked Zhora for the upset, based solely on how awkward he is and how I thought he style would mesh well with Linares' as opposed to Jorge being shot. Well, I was right in that assessment. The whole fight is tit for tat and a deserved win by Zhora, with him doing just enough every round to outwork him, landing well timed and very well placed shots on Jorge throughout. Jorge still throwing fast crisp combinations, but Zhora's combos and speed were enough to equal him. This content is protected
So basically Zorro dazzled the fans in the first half of the fight with a sublime display of Brit Slickness and then Spelman dazzled them in the second half by mounting a comeback with a display of your typical Brit Level grit and Brit Level warrior spirit which in turn forced Zorro to dig deep and summon the Brit Level warrior in him too?
Pretty much went just like that.... although Zorro isn't as slick as a gay blade. More like a non-binary dull one with a little butter on it.
Thanks for some recommendation here, there were couple that I missed that I have to catch up with before the end of a year - and thanks to person who shared link to Saka vs Narai in particular, I read about it on Asianboxing site - but wasn't able to find it until now, Japanese boxing scene is very fragmented these days, feels like, with all the paid streaming platforms. I usually do Fight of the Year by division: Heavyweight: 2022-01-01 Viktor Vykhryst vs Iago Kiladze Cruiserweight: 2022-07-02 Jai Opetaia vs Mairis Briedis Light Heavyweight: 2022-05-21 Joshua Buatsi vs Craig Richards Super Middleweight: 2022-12-17 Vladimir Shishkin vs Jose Uzcategui Middleweight: 2022-11-12 Zhanibek Alimkhanuly vs Denzel Bentley Super Welterweight: 2022-05-14 Jermell Charlo vs Brian Carlos Castano II Welterweight: 2022-04-16 Errol Spence Jr. vs Yordenis Ugas Super Lightweight: 2022-04-22 Alejandro Meneses vs Sam Maxwell Lightweight: 2022-04-21 Mercito Gesta vs Joel Diaz Jr. Super Featherweight: 2022-11-12 Thomas Mattice vs Christian Tapia Featherweight: 2022-03-12 Leigh Wood vs Michael Conlan Super Bantamweight: 2022-11-05 Khalid Yafai vs Jerald Paclar Bantamweight: 2022-09-22 Kai Chiba vs Keita Kurihara Super Flyweight: 2022-12-03 Juan Francisco Estrada vs Roman Gonzalez III Flyweight: 2022-12-03 Cristofer Rosales vs Joselito Velazquez Junior Flyweight: 2022-09-03 Sivenathi Nontshinga vs Hector Flores Calixto Strawweight: 2022-07-16 Oscar Collazo vs Vic Saludar Here's what I came up with, but I wasn't following the sport quite as closely as usual - so if someone has any recommendation, let me know - cheers. Some great fights that I think went under the radar (And don't think were mentioned here) are: 2022-04-09 Eumir Felix Marcial vs Isiah Hart 2022-04-21 Mercito Gesta vs Joel Diaz Jr. 2022-04-22 Alejandro Meneses vs Sam Maxwell
Two Australian fights in the top 5 (one of which I didn't see) & Justis Huni being in two of the top 10 best heavyweight fights of the year is great recognition for Australian boxing. The list as a whole reflects the great coverage of the sport @CST80 provides & without any geographical bias. The only other Australian fight I saw that comes to mind as being worthy of inclusion was Conor Wallace reversing his only professional defeat at the hands of Leti the Yeti. The Yeti was more dominant against Wallace than he was in their first fight until he got pinned in a corner & stopped. It was wild while it lasted.
Thank you for the kind words Sandman, much appreciated. I do my best, and never discriminate, all I care about is the fight and the fighters, doesn't matter where it is in the world. As far as Wallace-Leti II, I found a copy, and fully plan on watching it later today. This content is protected
Just got done with it, and goddamn Wallace has an excellent chin, he took some horrendous bombs, and aside from the on that sent his mouthguard sailing, none of them really shook him up. Leti showed some weird lapses in concentration there, and I think the shot that began his downward spiral, actually happened in the 5th, when he thought the 10 second warning was the bell, and Wallace nailed him when he went to walk to his corner. That was a hell of a scrap and will probably crack the Top 15. Although I didn't think he was a shutout, an argument could be made that Wallace shaded the 2nd and 5th.
That's one I've been hoping a copy would eventually show up somewhere. Asianboxing used to be quite reliable, but after the channel he used got deleted, it's harder and harder to find matches like this, it's a terrible pity. Not sure why they have an issue with it, it seems like it would serve as a promotional tool to get people interested in their fighters for their next fight. Good shout, I might have to add that one to my list. It was damned sure a better match than Saludar's questionable loss against Rosa. I added this one to my short list.
