Great list! I have Martin over Mikey as my number two but other than that I can't argue with the rest of the list.
These were the ones that really shocked me: 1. Teofimo Lopez vs. George Kambosos Jnr. 2. Josh Warrington vs. Mauricio Lara 3. Kenshiro Teraji vs. Masamichi Yabuki 5. Kid Galahad vs. Kiko Martinez 6. Gabriel Rosado vs. Bektemir Melikuziev 10. Jarrett Hurd vs. Luis Arias 11. Can Xu vs. Leigh Wood 17. Terri Harper vs. Alycia Baumgardner 18. Vito Mielnicki Jr. vs. James Martin 27. Miguel Berchelt vs. Oscar Valdez 36. Michael Polite Coffie vs. Jonathon Rice The others, I might not have favored the winner but it didn't have the same "shook" factor. Part of it was ordering. By the time we got to Mikey we had seen the "aging lower division guy gets out of shape and then tries a comeback against someone hungry" movie 5-6 times on the year.
wasnt that shocked with the teo fight quite a few were picking it or semi predicting it and considering all the delays it sort of spells disaster with that many distractions Pacquiao vs Ugas was not really a big shock to me then again I'm probably the biggest Ugas fan on here I also never thought Berchelt was some unbeatable monster for Valdez who I have always appreciated despite a lot of the detractors. Now obviously the PED scandal changes my view of him but skill and ability wise I never saw him as a mega underdog here and think he beats Navarrete as well
It wasn't an upset though. Both guys were Olympic gold medallists and World champions. There's nothing about it that screams 'upset'.
This list might be a bit biased, since I've been predicting that Usyk was going to beat AJ for the last 7 years on here, so... it wasn't even close to an upset in my book.
I tried to make sure I took into considering popular sentiment and didn't go too elitist. It's something I try to o with regularity. So while I thought George had a decent chance stylistically and wasn't all that shocked by the outcome. It was an upset nonetheless, just based on resumes and past performances, and the most shocking of all... that he actually won a decision over here. I put Pac-Ugas a little lower, because I thought it was a moderately decent one, but not all that shocking. Pac has always struggled with that style, and quite frankly, I thought he did better than a lot of people gave him credit for, even though he deserved to lose. Bit still, since I don't rate Ugas all that highly, and thought he legit lost against Porter, didn't do great against Ramos and struggled mightily with Dulorme, that Pac would be able to do better than they did and adjust eventually. I kind of agree in retrospect about Berhelt-Valdez, although I don't rate Valdez all tat highly and think he's actually quite easy to outbox, something was telling me all along, that Valdez was a terrible style match up for Berchelt and that he was going to walk onto something big repeatedly. I should have listened to my gut on that one, butt my dislike of Valdez was too strong.
Just a thought, but why Kambosos over Lara? Lara knocked out a guy with arguably one of the best chins in boxing. And he hadn't gotten a win like Kambosos had over Lee Selby. Kambosos was the underdog, but people knew he was at least fringe World level. Lee Selby is a decent win, even if Selby has been a tad overrated. Lara had no big wins at all. And there was also the drama leading up to Lopez v Kambosos involving all those delays, which we all knew could play a factor. I'd certainly take Warrington v Lara over Lopez v Kambosos. Both big upsets though.
This content is protected Pac-Ugas wasn't shocking in the least because there was a greater than 50% chance that octogenarian AND inactive Pac could be completely shot once on the night of the fight, which he was damn close to. The styles matchup was a factor and you are correct, it was a competitive fight with Ugas being the rightful winner. Ugas took a beating too — his face was lumped up badly.
