Its hard to get as excited as one should be as its kinda misleading. They still wont be competing in the true pro ranks but like someone mentioned earlier kinda just the halfway house. Still, its monumental and a huuuge step in the right direction.
I think the Cubans are conforming to the rule changes and thus will continue to compete in Olymics etc. So with no headgear but with the usual point system = semi-pro. That's what i got out of the article lol
Good news for Cubans, good news for boxing. Cubans have been some of the most talented boxers in history.
the title of the article is misleading everybody to believe that cuba is allowing they fighters to turn pro but it's not like that they gonna allow some athletes to participate in WSB only..they can't turn pro...but I m praying for they send the best Cuban fighters over there and they ask for political asylum..Im praying for.Robeisis Ramirez and Roniel Iglesias to escape and come to USA..if they allow Cuban National Amateur team to turn pro in three-four years every champion will be Cuban...and I think that is because of the mentality that they been trained..they wasn't trained to go to personal battles they been trained to go win boxing matches..that's why they don't look in the opponent match because they don't go to kill you they gonna outbox you..
The ban isn't completely lifted by the government is already making exceptions and providing incentives for fighters.
How is WSB not pro boxing? It is 5 round pro boxing between top competition, you get a card of 5 competitive fights usually. I wouldn't mind if all pro boxing was done in the format of WSB.
This is great news!!! If/when Cuba finally opens up " totally " and not partially it would cause a major impact on pro boxing. I am very happy that Cuba is joining this " semi-pro " Tournaments as this could trigger the end of the 50+ years ban on professional boxing in Cuba. Since 1959, the words " professional " in Cuba have been completely prohibited but now it seems that they have finally realized that it could benefit their athletes and the government too. Make no mistake about it, the top three Countries in pro boxing before Castro were USA, Mex and Cuba and the Cubans produced 7-8 Hall of famers. That was the time when there was only 1 World Champion per weight class and was much more difficult to be World Champ. At that time, Cuba only had about 3-4 million people and looked at how many great legends they produced. Just imagine how they would fare today with almost 12 million Cubans on the Island. If Cuba opens it's doors and finally welcomes professional boxing they would flood the pros with astonishing fighters. The Rigondeaux's, Gamboa's, Lara's type of boxers would be in every weight class. Boxing and baseball has always been a fever in Cuba and their huge black population helps them produce great boxers and baseball players. :good
