Now that the old dictator is fading and gave up power to his brother there is a rumor of starting some changes in sports (china model with some athletes playing pro),will start with baseball but would move to boxing at some point.
    then,after seen Rigondaux,Lara and company in action(joining Gamboa,solis,casa,Barthelemy,Yoan P hernandez...)you will see a true revolution of boxing!

yeah man those guys already paid their dues and are looking for big names ... it would take alot for an up and coming cuban to accomplish so much in such little time.

I'd like to see it though ... and remember great amateurs don't transition well into the pro ranks.

Even if Cuba never gives us another top boxer, we did get Gamboa...and for that I (and the rest of the boxing public) are very grateful.

If things change in Cuba, they will instantly be on the radar as a force in boxing right along Puerto Rico and Mexico and USA and UK etc. In fact there are 2 Cuban amateur fighters in our boxing gym who are very very talented. All they need is a superstar fighter like lets say Gamboa to really be a force in the sport. If Gamboa can pull it off than it would stir up A LOT of national pride and we would see hell of a lot of Cuban kids getting into the sport trying to keep the legacy going.

Look at what Trinidad and now Miguel Cotto did for Puerto Rico, the excitment that Trinidad brought to the Island fired a lot of kids up and boxing is pretty much PR's national sport. Same thing for the Filipinos..Do you know how insane Manny Pacquiao impacted those people, There will be kids wanting to be like him and getting into boxing to be the next great Filipino fighter.

I am SO HOPING that things change for Cuban fighters.

I don't think this will change anything. The fighters who are great leave or smuggle away, but hey if it increases the comp level I am all for it.

It seems most of you make one HUGE mistake

Cubans are not better then Americans, they are trained better.
If Cuba's great boxing-programm starts to decline.. so will the quality of the boxers.

You are right here. So the irony of Cuban boxers going pro is that Cuba may produce less great fighters. The reason is that it's not only the boxers who will go abroad but so are the trainers. With the great trainers of Cuba gone, so will be the great boxers that Cuba consistently produces.

    Exactly.

But I don't think such thing will happen anytime soon. I am a nobody, but believe me.
I think there will be no pro boxing/sports when Castro's alive: he despises pro-sports. And even if he's gone they won't change all over a sudden.

It will take another ten years I guess for major changes. And even then nothing is sure.

I have no doubt if they were alud to turn pro they would have equal success to simlar nations, such as Peurto Rico. but give it ten to fifteen years, to show them there true potential as a professional boxing nation.

There are always been great cuban boxers, even before Castro...Kid Choclate(one of the greatest of all times)Kid Gavilan,Kid Tunero,Mantequilla Napoles,Benny Kid Paret....boxing is like baseball in Cuba...talent is everywhere. Its just unfair how boxers from other countries get the oportunity to make some money and cubans just get bikes after winning an olimpic gold.
