Ok, to you guys in touch with world affairs, when Castro dies (if he has not already) ,will communism in Cuba come to an end?

I have heard it is inevitable and will end pretty much as soon as Fidel pops it.

Therefore when Castro does die, which can only be a matter of months, there is nothing to stop all the Cuban amateurs turning pro, and boxing could be in for a real shake up. The Cubans could really start to dominate the sport...

No, Castros brother will take over, then one of the kids. His brother is already runnig things anyway as Castro is on his last legs.

Im not saying that as soon as Fidel dies that the government is going to get overthrown. However, after a few years Raul will begin to break down and give in from economic pressures.

Thats what ive heard, but im only half Cuban and never been to the country so I'm not going to speak for the island

Wrong, thier is no economic pressure, as long as the Cuban trade embargo is kept in place by the US, nothing will change. Obama has vowed to remove it if he gets into power.....this may change things, but how it lies now nothing will change.

First of all they will continue to have their own identity even after castro dies.

Second, IF it would happen then they can indeed turn pro. But remember that they are so good because of the boxing programm. Once that program will go down so will the quality of their boxing.

Regardless of the political ruler, many Cubans stay amateur because they themselves dislike the corporate lure of the professional game. Domestic amateur boxing in Cuba leads to national heroes. The minute they turn pro they are lambasted.

It could happen but only as a result of a social revolution rather than a political one.

As for the scare stories of boxers being made to stay amateur, sure it happens but not the extent we like to think!

Not a chance. No one will be able to rule as Fidel has. The guy is a legend and is himself a figure of power. When he is gone, things he put in place will begin to crumble, and his brothers will not be able to, or maybe even want to, keep them in place.

That's right. Just look at history. When the figurehead of a powerful organization dies, so does the power of the organization. When Don King dies, his promotional company will fade. Without Don King, his company is just another company. Without Bob Arum, Top Rank is just another company, etc.. The list goes on.

Do you people actually believe that Cuba is so fragile that the death of Fidel will make a significant change?Marti ,who is an icon in Cuba passed away and the struggle continued.Fidel has been inactive for almost 2 years and the change to Raul was transparent.Raul is a hard liner with incredible organizational skills and prefers to keep a low profile. The embargo,as stupid as it is,has only strengthened the resolve to carry on and now with oil being discovered off Cuba's coastline and being refined one barrell of crude for one barrell of refined from their friend Hugo Chavez,Cuba is in a stronger position than ever.
Only a President like Obama who is prepared to sit down and talk with Raul and acknowledge the Socialist Sytem will resolve any issues.Cuba is a sovereign country and deserves to be respected as such.:good

Oh how I love this post. I agree with every single point, simply because it's the truth.

It's not only the embargo that causes poverty in Cuba. The ''bloccade'' is a big factor as well (as you know it prohibites other countries from doing business with Cuba as well).
