i think cuban defectors like lara, gamboa etc.. fall under the "wet feet/ dry feet rule" and can get political asylum in the US rather easily.

Here's the big news: two of the 4 Cuban amateur stars has now co-signed with Golden Boy Promotions!

So Gamboa (and probably Solis if he gets his VISA) will fight on Gary Shaw cards in the future and Barthelemy and Lara will fight on GBP cards in the USA.

So it seems in the European countries and Turkey Arena will promote the fighthers while in the US he'll be more like the manager of them, putting on other promotions undercard.

Of course we can expect these two Cubans to appear on HBO as soon as they'll reach the level of opposition needed. I think it's a good idea to work with two promotions so the 4 Cuban talents can appear on both GBP and Gary Shaw HBO and Showtime events...

Here are the press release quotes:

    Oscar De La Hoya:
"As an Olympic Gold Medal winner myself, I'm very pleased to add another fellow Olympic Gold Medalist in Yan Barthelemy and a World Amateur Champion in Erislandy Lara to the Golden Boy roster," said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. "It takes special talent to excel for so many years in the Cuban amateur system and I know that Yan and Erislandy will use that experience to soar through their professional careers."

    Ahmet Öner:
"I know that signing this deal with Golden Boy Promotions will help to advance the careers of Barthelemy and Lara," said Arena Box Promotions CEO, Ahmet Oner. "I am excited to expand our company's presence here in the United States by working in close partnership with Oscar, Richard Schaefer and the Golden Boy staff. I look forward to a long relationship with all of them."

Lara's name is on the GBP site:
    http://www.goldenboypromotions.com/fighters/elara.php

He's gonna make his pro debut in a few hours in Ankara, Turkey vs. Ivan Maslov. His first fight will be at 160, 8 pounds over his amateur weight. We'll see whether that's gonna be better for him...

    Good luck!

Thanks a lot for the info!

I think 8 pounds is okay, considering that he fought at the lowest he could be for/in Cuba:yep
I think he needs it to feel/be stonger in the pro's.

Thx mate! Very nice first post! :good

You're right, there's definitely a lot of ring rust. Fortunately he can start training now properly after the long and probably very exhausting journey...

(by the way the ref says 'break' very funny :))

We would not be talking about these 4 cubans if Guillermo Rigondeaux would have left to.

The only way he's going pro is if he gets on a boat to Miami. I doubt the Cuban government ever lets him out of the country again.

Barthelemy's already looking like a bust.

Lara weighed in at 154 for his fight vs. Denis Alexeevs. So it seems they are targeting the LMW division. Fight is tonight.

Both Erislandy Lara and Odlanier Solis can be seen on German tv channel DSF very soon. Their fights will start in about 2 hours.
Whoever resides here in europe and has a satelitte dish can watch their fights. Not really sure but I think that there will be a live stream on the internet ,too.

Okay, from now on the thread's title will be the not too intelligent Cuban boxing: Arena's fantastic four, of course dealing with Odlanier Solis, Erislandy Lara, Yan Barthelemy and Yuriorkis Gamboa who has his on thread.

Yesterday in Cuxhaven, Germany both Solis and Lara made short work. Lara KO'd Denis Alexeevs in the first round making a promosing debut at 154 and Solis made short work with a 98 second KO of Chad Van Sickle. Solis came in again very heavy at 256 and it seems his power is there more when the extra weight is on. He had 3 fights in the 240s and won only 1 by TKO. I still think he needs to get down to the 230s, not in a few weeks, but fight after fight. He was 247 a few months ago but now he's back at the 250s. Not the best thing IMO...
