Right, I'll try to make a point (sort of) instead of quibbling.
Cubans often go up in weight class after defecting and some posters like us to believe that it is due to poor nutrition in Cuba. Now the top performing Cubans don't go up in weight very much:

    Casamayor - lightweight am/lightweight pro,
Rigo - bantam/light feather or bantam pro,
    Gamboa feather/feather,
    Lara - welter/light middle.

Of these Rigo was a bantam since 2000 and Lara a welter since 2003 so it's no surprise that they go up eventually. So I'd say it's rather a sign of bad habits than better nutrition. (Amateurs weigh in every day during a tournament and thus can't weight-drain themselves. So even if you stay at your am weight it should probably count as an increase.)
Back to Ugas, since he moved to light welter only last year I'm sorried that him staying at welter would be a bad sign.

Judging from this and the "Future of Cuba in the Pros" thread.

I'm guessing there are alot of people who don't like Cuban boxers on this site.

Amateurs usually move up in weight once they turn pro. Professional boxing has different physical requirements, or simply put, it is more physical, therefore most boxers put on additional muscles. Training regimen is also different, pros are not in the gym all year and balloon up between fights, so it's only natural they don't drain down to a very low weight. Byrd was a middleweight as an amateur and a heavy as a pro even though that's a bit extreme. Ugas is a young kid still growing, and had a pretty rough year behind him having forced to retire, flee Cuba and settle down in Miami, so him fighting at WW now doesn't mean he'll fight there forever. Like I said, he'll end up fighting at his most natural pro weight, he's got a pretty good team around him to take care of him.

Cubans, what do you guys think of Alexei Acosta? I think he's a ****ing beast. I think he's top 5 in Cuban prospects.
