Indeed. It wouldn't have been possible without him, but it was just the progression of focus turning from the fight to his writing style and his obliviousness to humor and sarcasm that did it.

 

I don't think Brown was a washed up welterweight against Norris .

 

I say yes! He beat Benitez, Duran 2 out of 3 (even the loss was close), Hearns (and a draw at SMW that most felt Hearns won), and Hagler. 5-1-1 (3) vs. these great fighters.

Norris was very good but not on the level of Leonard IMO. He was blown out in 2 by Julian Jackson, stopped with a jab from Simon Brown in the 4th (yes he decisioned him in the rematch). He looked good vs. past prime versions of Mugabi (never that good IMO anyway), Curry, and Leonard. he also looked good vs. Meldrick Taylor who really shouldn't have fought a good JMW like Norris. Solid wins over Castro, Daniels, Blocker, Vaden, and Pettway. Very good but not great IMO.

 

Yes, possibly even a good chance of it, after all I hear Ray Leonard was pretty good.
