Hell yes!!! Norris did not have the chin or defense to handle the blazing speed, skill, guile, footwork, and yes punch, of a young Ray Leonard. Norris was a very good boxer, but beating a completely past-it Ray means next to nothing. In fact, I'd say the fact that even an inactive mid 30s Ray (who should have stuck with the old man's tour) went the distance with Norris tells me a young Ray for sure can handle Norris' punch. Then it comes down to speed footwork and skill, and I give the edge to Ray in all of those areas. Only thing I think Norris might have done a tad better was punch, but I'd be open to arguments even on that point.

 That's funny! You mustve missed all the knockdowns, all the times Ray was cowering on the ropes in fear of another pasting by the immaculate combinations of Norris

If only you were as confident as you try to sound.

How does going 11 years without a loss make you completely past it?

I keep asking but no one will answer it.

you also won't tell me why it took 9 rounds to beat slow, immobile Kalule who got beat by another guy with 10 fights - one year later

I told you he was no superman. Kalule got no speed OR punch and he still went 9. What do you think Norris is going to do to him? A guy that's got both along with footwork and who dont stay put so you can hit him

He's going to murder him, that's what. He'd hurt him, embarrass him, then use his head for ping pong practice

You know you got no claim to make for Ray beating Norris. I got the claim for Norris tho. Terry beat him. Ray never beat Norris and he never gave him a fight

    where's your claim?

Ray was favored 3-1 to destroy Norris. I dont even think my man was fighting at half speed when he polished off Leonard. had he gone any faster, Terry wouldve knocked him out

In fact, everything you just mentioned you said just to cover up the embarassment of losing to Norris. That Ray wasnt active when Terry kicked his butt. He last fought twice in 89, and before that, in 88, and before that in 87 so the ringgrust was long gone

just another excuse for the loss

and lest we forget, he dominated his last fight strictly by boxing and moving

he just couldnt do the same w Norris becuz my man had too much speed for him and becuz he wouldnt stay put for Ray to unload on. It was my man that laid the whipping but you act like your man had all the rights.

anyways, based on what I seen in the Kalule fight and the Howard fight, my man Terry beats on and wins every round becuz he's simply too fast and Ray never had the experience to deal with that kind of fighter

what a joke, saying Norris' power was not an issue with leonard

Two KD's and hurt every other round starting with round 1

Must not have even looked at the fight

Ray NEVER faced anyone with this kind of speed...and power

Norris was slick, quick, and he made Ray Leonard sick

I agree with a lot of the points made about Norris` skills... But two things must be noted, SRL was WAY removed from his prime when he fought Norris`, to say otherwise is way of base. Second, I have a hard time making someone an all time great when they get KO`d more than once by very mediocre fighters. As for bouncing of the canvas, could be true. But once Norris fine china chin was tapped, there was only one bounce cause there he stayed ! Norris couldn`t even finish a used up version of SRL...

Norris was a very good fighter, but essentially a frontrunner..he'd have been beaten quite handily by Ray...prime for prime and knocked out..not tko'ed but knocked the hell out..within 10 rounds.

"11 years without a loss" thats classic. Your argument that Leonard was prime because he was 11 years without a loss is a bit skewed considering he was inactive for 6 years out of that 11.

I didnt say Norris was an all time great. And neither is leonard, but rather than putting the blame on Leonard's age, it should be put on where it belongs, the speed of Norris

I dont see how Ray was way removed from his prime. That's something fans use to blame the for the loss. He was winning wasn't he? Ray hadnt lost in 11 years and was heavily favored. So to say he was shot or some such is to me way off base. fans just can't accept he was beaten by someone better and that he couldnt deal with speed

I mean, just becuz he levelled Dave Green or tko'd the likes of Howard & Kalule doesnt mean you can deal with the likes of Norris.

I really think you're dwelling on Norris' losses in order that you can bring him down to a level Leonard can safely handle. You're also asking me too much to make nothing of their actual match in which Terry proved his superior in every area and dominated him . You're also trying to make too much of of Ray's supposed slowdown. What slowdown? Last time I checked, he dominated Duran in previous fight. Just like you tried making a layoff an issue when ther really wasnt one. In fact, Ray had been fighting regularly. That ring rust came off a long time ago

and let's drop that excuse "Ray hadnt been the same since his fight with Bruce Finch"

I suppose Bruce Finch was Leonard's version of Zora Foley

Not as long as Terry had his speed

Not as long as Terry could hit back

Not as long as Ray feared getting hit by him

Terry a frontrunner? What the hell do you call Ray leonard?

    sore loser

well considering how he came back with 1 fight in the last 5 yrs before meeting Hagler and the fact that Ray was active every year before meeting Terry, it's hard not to see things my way

Prime Sugar Ray Leonard had speed and reflexes comparable with Ali and Roy Jones, pound for pound. This would be the difference against Terry Norris and I'd bet on Ray stopping him late. Norris would provide a rough and tough evening, but I don't think he beats a prime Leonard.

it took prime SRL nine just to beat Kalule and Howard

as far as Leonard's reflexes, that is just an empty claim

He may have had Ali's reflexes (not Jones, never Jones) but he didnt have his chin nor mental toughness. He was a quitter as he showed in the Howard fight

you wouldnt have seen Ali quit after the Howard fight

Ali did not quit after losing to Frazier.

Leonard never would have lasted the full ten w Norton after suffering an early round broken jaw.

Leonard is not tough like Ali, is not tough like Jack Johnson

it's easy to talk about putting money on Leonard if there is no chance in the two of them meeting. But you know if it came down to it, your money would really be put on Norris if you care anything about winning

Then there`s Norris, who wasn`t tough enough on several occasions. Geez wake up, Leonard was nowhere near his prime against Norris. If you can`t see that, you have no knowledge of boxing... It is just a stupid comment to make. Like saying that Rosenblatt kicked a prime Norris butt, that too would be way off base. A prime Leonard was able to absorb the almost nuclear force os Tommy Hearns right hand, and alomost closed eye and still come back to win. Be honest, you have to know that there is no way in hell that Norris could take those kind of shots, survive and come back to win. As for beating good boxers, what about Benitez ? He too had a shake chin, but was an unbelievable boxer. Leonard figured him out and eventually stopped him.I want you to sit and think if anyone here can HONESTLY see SRL losing to and getting STOPPED by, Mullings and Brown ? I keep bringign this up not to make SRL look better, but to point out that Norris could be KO`d by way less than fighters. This kind of pedigree does not make for a great fighter. And prime against Howard????? He had been off for quite a long time so he def. was rusty... Plus if you did ever get a chance to read about boxing back then, you would know that at the time Kalule was very respected in the boxing circles... Much more than Mullings or Brown were I can assure you....

still trying to convince me that Ray was better than Norris

I agree, Ray was better than Norris but head to head, Norris would always win like Foreman will always beat Frazier

It's THE SPEED. Terry has too much of it

as for Benitez you got to be KIDDING! His feet all far apart trying to trade jabs, that's all he knew how to do. He dont have Terry's movement or speed or power. all he knows how to do is practice his defense but he got no offense, nothing to make others respect him

Terry KNEW how to win ray's respect

I really think Ray shouldve been taking fights against better fighters instead of wasting our time with rematches w Hearns and Duran

wins over Pryor, Curry, and Nunn are all that seperate Ray Leonard from immortality. Sadly, he didnt care to update the opposition and keep up with the times
