I'd say that while both were losing fights, Palomino certainly put up a worthy effort against the two best opponents he fought, Benitez and Duran. Cuevas on the other hand was wiped out by Hearns and Duran. However I'd say that generally Cuevas took on the better challengers in his title defenses despite Palomino being the linear champion. It's a shame this fight didn't happen because there's no way it couldn't have been exciting.
A real war of attrition here. Pipino's best shot is to charge out the gate early and exploit the fact that Carlos sometimes started slowly. I think Palomino withstands this early storm and comes back with his superior boxing skills. This isn't something I'd be willing to bet on though, and any outcome is possible, with the exception of an early knockout by Palomino. Within his stylistic limitations, Cuevas was a pretty smart slugger. Against southpaw Billy Backus, he stowed away his hook, and immediately hammered away almost exclusively with lead rights. Carlos would need to be prepared for this. Both could go 15 rounds and finish strong. A late stoppage by either would likely be the result of a singular bomb, as neither was likely to wear down.
pepino was a terror for 4 years and defended his title against quality opposition. In palamino however he'd be facing someone who was a cut above the rest and who was physically tough. I see palamino outboxing cuevas, taking advantage of his defensive flaws and wearing him down with well-timed punches. Cuevas has his moments, shaking cuevas a few times but eventually wilts under and accumulation of punishment by round 10.
Pipino Cuevas was greater than Palomino and he would stop him in the mid rounds. The style of Palomino would not be very effective against Cuevas. Cuevas KO 5 Palomino.
Well so far its close with Palomino ahead 6 to 5. I have always gone back and forth with this one, one day ill say Palomino next Cuevas. There have been good points made for both guys. I have an old timer firiend who use to co own the Main Street gym (no longer there)where both men have trained at and he swears that Cuevas would have beat him.
Your friend sounds like he knows the score. Cuevas not only would have beat him, he would have killed him Judging from the Duran fight, Carlos didnt take being pressured too well. He's not what you would call slippery
Yey and also Durans speed gave Palomino problems. Even Palomino stated that Duran was very fast, alot faster than he expected. Well yey Mando Muniz gave him fits with his pressure too. In one of their fights the fight was even going into the last round and Palomino pulled out a ko in the last round.
Well im a big Duran fan(my favorite) but i have to say that Cuevas was more past it than Duran when they fought, it would not have been as easy had they fought a few years earlier. Duran would have stopped him but it wouldnt have been until at least the 9th or 10th and hed probably feel Cuevas power and survive a scare. Duran had an awesome Chin, but Cuevas is one of the best punchers ever.
a last minute KO? That would backfire with Cuevas. An educated guess tells me that Pipino walks right thru his best shots and breaks him into pieces I finally figured out why ESBers favor Palomino as they do,, because he was linear champ. Ability has nothing to do with it. ESBers dont know ability or lack of it when they see it. They're pretty much blind to what ability is otherwise they would know Palomino would serve as a live punching bag and crushed no later than 12
Even though i feel they are pretty even, i must say i respect my friends opinion on this as he knew them both and Watched them train up close. Cant get no better than that as far as comparing 2 fighters.
On paper they it may look as tho Carlos has an edge but in an actual fight, I know Pipino is going to be the one backing him up. ESBers imagine Carlos in a comfortable and leisurely, no stress contest where he circles Pipino, warding off his clumsy attacks and then picking him apart. Whereas I see Carlos getting hammered on the ropes and getting beat to a pulp. It all comes down to how much punishment he can stand but I dont see him going 15
