That was different. Duran was a much better fighter than cuevas and besides, it wasn't so much the pressure that beat palamino, it was the feinting and overall skill level and slickness.
I agree it was his superior speed and boxing ability that won it more so than the pressure. Even Palomino said that.
Palomino would be open for any explanation at that moment. From what I remember (and I do have the fight) Duran worked him over for most of the ten rounds on the ropes
Check that copy again rooster...majority of that fight was off the ropes till a few extended periods late. It was actually Carlos who attempted at times to bull and turn Roberto on to the ropes, with little success.
Interesting that Duran fought both Palamino & Cuevas, while Leonard fought neither. Duran really fought a bunch of champions in his career.
Well you can hardly fault Ray for that...He beat the men who took both of their titles. Leonard mentioned fighting Cuevas after he beat Hearns (the same night he called out Pryor) but Jose lost to Stafford and when on a break.
I like Palomino in this one because I believe he was a better all-around fighter than Cuevas. Cuevas was downright scary before the Hearns anihilation though.
Duran was better than Cuevas and Cuevas was better than Palomino. Cuevas in 1980 would have been tough for Duran, but to be honest Duran would have probably been too much for Pipino in the late rounds. So I am admitting Duran is a great fighter since only a great fighter can beat another great like Pipino. Palomino was good but not in the top level of guys like Duran or Cuevas or Benitez in championship caliber. Cuevas fought Weston and Shields and Hearns in his title reign. He fought them all.
Well im sure thats the Cuevas the Tm is talking about. These Fantasy matchups are always about fighters in their prime unless noted otherwise.
The Benitez-Palomino fight was razor-close and fought in PR - Wilfred's own backyard keep in mind... Cuevas would have been defeated by Duran in 80' the same way RD beat him in early 83.' Remember, although Cuevas was considered (rightfully so) to be a killer pre-Hearns, Duran was widely recognized as the best fighter in the world - period. Duran had granite in that chin and was adept at rolling with punches thereby nullifying their effect. But your points are well taken!
