We all know the obvious ones, Ali, Rocky, Tyson, Louis, Dempsey, Johnson, but lets fill in the gaps
    Jeffries,
Johnson ( for the wrong reasons, but I don't think he cared too much with his 14K grin and luck with the ladies)
Willard was considered boring and his rare defenses made him poorly viewed,
Obviously Dempsey gets stardom in his time....
Post Dempsey, Tunney wasn't very well liked at that point, Max Baer was though and may have been the face of the sport before Louis came around.... How well liked was Canera? Sharkey? Schmelling?
Louis became the Boxing Icon from say 36 - the end of his career, directly giving way to Rocky in my view.... Patterson was well liked, Liston sure wasn't..... Ali pretty much dominates as the face from 63 - near his retirement with some showings of Frazier and Foreman getting the spotlight... Was Holmes considered near that iconic in the public eye? Help me out here, all opinions welcome....

Well Tyson of course. You could make a case for the Klitschkos, perhaps, in a European context.
