He has to be disapointed being that he was dominating that fight and was on his way to winning and Scott Smith came from behind in the last round. They definetly need to fight again.
I think he got tired. If you are not training for a fight your gas tank will slowly shrink even if you are keeping in good shape. He was in good shape but it looked like he was going for the ko towards the end and in doing that he gave Smith his only chance which was to win on intangiables like stamina, toughness, power and durability. Trilogy for Melendez Thomson and rematch for Le Smith. Make those fights immediately.
He looked out of shape and rusty. He wasn't as sharp, his reflexes aren't as good. He was still skilled and could throw his kicks and punches completely untelegraphed, but he is certainly slower and actually was looking almost 40. Previously he did not look like an old fighter but we know fighters can become old overnight. Taking a 2 year layoff and then getting in the ring with a wild puncher like hands of smith, this fight is very much like Roy Jones vs Danny Green.
I agree. We see this all the time with athletes of this level. If you take a 2 year lay off at 38 years old, you might not have a career to come back to. 2 years is an eternity in MMA, and I do think Cung Le was not in fighting shape. He looked winded and slow.
